Sergeant Promotion Process - Herts (Internal & External)

INTERNAL  

Promotion to Sergeant

Hertfordshire Constabulary is inviting applications from substantive Constables seeking promotion to the rank of Sergeant. All applicants will be assessed fairly and equally, based on their suitability and readiness for promotion. 

To be successful, you must demonstrate your capability in: 

Preventing harm and crime 

Catching criminals and solving crime 

Protecting victims and vulnerable people 

Providing effective, visible leadership aligned with Hertfordshire Constabulary values 

To apply, you must have a Career Conversation with your line manager and complete the Career Conversation Outcome Form ensuring you have experience which you can use to evidence against the four areas. Your line manager will record the agreed succession planning grading. This will be followed by moderation and a board process. For full details, please refer to the attached candidate guidance. 

 

Candidates whose line management assessment states Ready for Promotion will have their on-going performance assessed using existing data sets, including but not limited to: 

  • Crime outcomes (team or individual) 
  • Supervisory reviews 
  • PDR completion 
  • Attendance management (team or individual) 
  • Mandatory training completion 

 

Completed Career Conversation Outcome Forms must be emailed to promotions@herts.police.uk by Monday 6th April 2026 no later than 12:00 

 

Candidates will then be invited to attend an in person Practical assessment. Which will assess decision-making, leadership, judgment, and alignment with Team Herts behaviours and values. These will take place week commending 21st April 2026.

Those supported through the career conversation, data assessment and Practical assessment will be invited to sit a board process.  

 
Boards for this process will take place from week commencing 18th May 2026 through to 28th May 2026.

As a Level 3 Disability Confident Leader, Hertfordshire Constabulary operates the ‘Offer an Interview’ scheme, guaranteeing an interview to all applicants who declare a disability and meet the essential criteria for the role. For this process, the minimum eligibility criteria are: 

  • A succession planning grading of Ready Now for career advancement 
  • No live formal disciplinary sanction

EXTERNAL 

 

Promotion to Sergeant – External Candidates

Application Process 
External candidates must complete the External Applicant Form, providing evidence against the four areas listed above. Once completed, this form should be presented to your line manager for review and endorsement. For full details, please refer to the attached candidate guidance. 

Completed External Applicant Forms must be emailed to promotions@herts.police.uk by Monday 6th April 2026 no later than 12:00
