In this morning’s announcement, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer detailed the Government’s plans to reduce crime and improve public confidence in policing.
The new Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee pledges to put 13,000 additional police officers, PCSOs and special constables into neighbourhood policing roles and aims for each neighbourhood to have a contactable officer addressing local issues.
The plan includes funding for 3,000 police officers, 4,000 PCSOs, expenses for 3,000 additional special constables, plus 3,000 existing officers to be diverted to the new neighbourhood policing programme.
A press release form the Home Office this morning details the Labour Party’s aim for the Neighbourhood Police Guarantee to achieve “an improved neighbourhood policing response.”
The mission includes a neighbourhood policing team in every local area carrying out visible patrols in town centres and high streets and providing a named, contactable officer for every neighbourhood.
A new Police and Crime Performance Unit in the Home Office will create a single performance framework to agree neighbourhood policing standards and aim for consistency across the 43 police forces.
The Government promises a new career pathway and new training to be brought in with a specific focus on neighbourhood policing to “tackle persistent anti-social behaviour” and “crack down on shop theft, street theft and assaults against retail workers.”
