Trainee Radio Engineer (12‑Month Development Programme)
This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build specialist expertise in radio systems through a structured 12‑month training and development programme, with a clear progression pathway into a fully competent Radio Engineer role.
You will be supported with formal radio technology training, hands‑on experience, mentoring, and an agreed personal development plan. On successful completion of the programme and demonstration of full competence, you will progress to a higher pay grade in line with our Police Staff pay scales.
What You’ll Do
As a Trainee Radio Engineer, you will work alongside experienced engineers and gradually build responsibility as your skills develop. Your duties will include:
- Support the installation, maintenance, and monitoring of radio systems
- Assist with fault diagnosis, upgrades, and system performance checks
- Provide support to front line radio equipment users
- Work alongside experienced engineers and third‑party suppliers
- Contribute to documentation and service improvements
- Learn and apply ITIL‑aligned service practices
Your Development Programme
Over a 12‑month period you will receive:
- Structured radio technology and systems training
- On‑the‑job learning with experienced Radio Engineers
- A clearly defined development and competency framework
- Regular reviews against your agreed development plan
- A clear succession pathway into a substantive Radio Engineer role
Progression to the higher pay grade will be subject to demonstrating full competence against agreed standards.

Work location:
Working at Police Headquarters, Portishead with occasional travel to other police sites (you will have access to company vehicles).
Driving licence: There will be occasions when you are required to travel around the force area therefore the successful person will need to hold a full UK driving licence.
