Working Hours

About the Role
As a Firearms Enquiry Officer, you’ll play a vital role in helping keep our communities safe by ensuring that only suitable individuals are entrusted with firearm and shotgun certificates.
Managing your own caseload, you’ll conduct enquiries into applications, renewals, variations and suitability reviews. This will include visiting applicants in their homes, conducting interviews, assessing firearm security, carrying out land suitability assessments where appropriate, and gathering information from a range of sources to enable informed licensing decisions.
Using your investigative skills and professional judgement, you’ll prepare detailed reports and make evidence-based recommendations regarding the grant, renewal, refusal or revocation of certificates in accordance with legislation, Statutory Guidance and force policy.
You’ll also provide advice and guidance to certificate holders, registered firearms dealers, shooting organisations and partner agencies, helping to maintain high levels of public confidence in the licensing process.
What We’re Looking For
This is a role for someone who enjoys working independently, managing their own workload and making balanced, well-reasoned decisions.
You’ll be able to:
- Build positive relationships with people from all backgrounds
- Communicate confidently, professionally and with empathy
- Conduct thorough enquiries and interviews
- Assess risk and make sound evidence-based decisions
- Produce accurate, well-written reports
- Manage competing priorities while meeting statutory deadlines
- Work independently whilst contributing positively to a supportive team
Knowledge of firearms legislation or previous firearms licensing experience would be advantageous but is not essential, as comprehensive training will be provided.
Working Arrangements
This is primarily a home-based role, providing you with the flexibility to organise your own diary while meeting the needs of the organisation and our customers.
You’ll be responsible for arranging home visits, video and telephone appointments across the South Cumbria area, predominantly covering Carnforth, Milnthorpe and Grange-over-Sands areas, although occasional travel throughout Cumbria may be required.
You will use your own vehicle for business travel. Essential User status and mileage allowances are payable.
Why Join Us?
Joining our Firearms Licensing Unit means becoming part of a highly respected, supportive and experienced team that is recognised for the quality of its work.
In return, we offer:
- The opportunity to work in one of the UK’s highest-performing firearms licensing departments
- A varied and rewarding role where no two days are the same
- Flexible, home-based working
- Comprehensive training and ongoing professional development
- Supportive colleagues who are committed to helping one another succeed
- The opportunity to make a genuine difference to public safety through fair, proportionate and evidence-based decision making
If you’re looking for a challenging and rewarding role where you can work independently, develop specialist knowledge and make a real impact within your community, we’d love to hear from you.
For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Inspector Paul Ellis on 101 (extension 41427) or FEO Mandy Hutchinson on 07929738111.
