About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a qualified Solicitor or Barrister to join our Legal Services Department, providing a comprehensive legal service across a wide range of civil and corporate matters.

Reporting to the Head of Legal Services, you will play a key role in ensuring the Constabulary’s legal responsibilities are effectively identified, managed, and protected, while supporting operational and organisational decision-making.

This is a varied and engaging role where no two days are the same, offering exposure to a broad portfolio of legal work within a policing environment.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Provide legal advice across civil litigation, employment, disciplinary, and corporate/commercial matters
  • Conduct and support civil litigation, including preparing cases and attending court or tribunal hearings
  • Respond to civil claims by gathering evidence, assessing liability, and negotiating settlements where appropriate
  • Undertake legal research to support robust case preparation and representation
  • Advise on the legal implications of legislative changes, policy developments, and organisational decisions
  • Support the development and implementation of legal policies, procedures, and governance frameworks
  • Provide management information and insight to support corporate planning

You will also handle a varied caseload including matters such as:

  • Civil claims against the Chief Constable
  • Employment Tribunal claims
  • Firearms appeals
  • Inquests
  • Applications for Civil Protection Orders
About You

We are looking for a candidate who:

  • Is a qualified Solicitor or Barrister with a minimum of 3 years PQE
  • Has strong experience in civil litigation and knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules
  • Demonstrates excellent analytical ability and legal judgement
  • Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Takes a proactive and solution-focused approach
  • Builds strong working relationships with colleagues and external partners
  • Is able to manage a complex and varied caseload independently
  • Can adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment

Experience of supervising staff is also an important aspect of this role.

Salary and Benefits
  • Salary: £52,491 – £63,588 (Band 6)
  • 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday

Additional Role Information
  • Travel across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire, and occasionally further afield, may be required
  • Occasional work outside normal hours may be necessary
