Crime Scene Investigator (Level 1)

We are recruiting a Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) Level 1, providing an exciting opportunity to begin (or progress) a professional career within Forensic Investigations.
About the Role
As a CSI Level 1, you will attend and process volume and vehicle crime scenes, using forensic techniques to identify, visualise, capture, and recover evidence. Working within the Forensic Investigation Unit you will play a key frontline role in securing forensic opportunities that support investigations, identify offenders, and strengthen case files for court. Everything you do must meet professional forensic standards, including the requirements of ISO 17020 accreditation and the Forensic Science Regulator’s Code of Practice.
This role involves working independently, often attending sensitive or distressing scenes, and requires strong judgement, professionalism, and emotional resilience.
Key Responsibilities
- Attend and assess volume crime scenes to identify and recover forensic evidence including DNA, fingerprints, footwear marks and trace evidence.
- Create comprehensive photographic records to support investigations and the criminal justice process.
- Ensure the integrity, continuity and security of all exhibits, including hazardous materials, in line with legislation and evidential standards.
- Produce clear, timely and accurate reports, statements and documentation.
- Present evidence in court and other hearings when required.
- Identify when specialist support is necessary to progress an investigation.
- Contribute to the Unit’s cleaning and decontamination procedures to maintain a safe and contamination‑controlled working environment.
- Work in full compliance with ISO accreditation requirements, including engagement with audits, training, competency assessments and quality assurance processes.
About You
We are looking for someone who can work methodically, stay calm under pressure, and communicate effectively with people from all backgrounds. You will need to prioritise workloads, manage competing demands, and maintain high professional standards at all times.
Essential Requirements:
- Educated to Level 6 in a science‑related subject, OR equivalent experience.
- Willingness to complete an accredited CSI Stage 1 training course.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Competence in standard IT systems and digital tools.
- Ability to analyse information, problem‑solve and follow procedures accurately.
Desirable:
- Experience in a forensic discipline or laboratory environment.
Please note:
The role involves lone working and regular exposure to potentially upsetting scenes. Vetting at “management level”, DNA/fingerprint elimination sampling, and passing a police driving test are mandatory requirements.
