Our Special Constables are a vital part of the West Midlands Police family, playing an essential role in keeping communities safe and delivering excellent service to the public. They have the same powers, equipment, and uniform as regular Police Officers but volunteer their time.
The Roads Policing Unit at Perry Barr has Specials working on both 24/7 Traffic, as well as the Road Harm Reduction Team.
This is a rewarding and challenging role that allows you to make a real difference, and build on the experience that you will already have gained in your first years as a Special.
The training commitments in order to become a qualified roads policing officer are not insignificant, and the candidate needs to already be a competent officer well versed in day to day policing.
Commitment
- Training period: Expected monthly evening sessions across ~18 months, with additional weekend courses to complete the Roads Policing Officer course. Completing this course is mandatory to remain on the unit.
- Suggested volunteering: minimum of 2 shifts per month (operationally) to maintain operational competence, and build evidence to sign off their Roads Policing Officer PDP. Training requirements sit as additional time required.
Key Responsibilities
- Enforce road traffic laws and detect driving offenses to improve road safety.
- Respond to and investigate road traffic collisions to determine cause and liability.
- Disrupt criminal use of the road network through targeted patrols and intelligence-led stops.
- Educate road users on safe driving practices and support national road safety campaigns.
- Conduct roadside breath tests, drug wipes, and vehicle safety compliance checks.

Essential Requirements
- Independent Patrol Status
- Minimum of 12 months service, but ideally 3+ years.
- Licence, or be on track to have their driving licence within 6 months of starting

Selection Process
- Discovery Sessions - There will be 2 opportunities to join a discovery session via teams. This will be available whilst the role is live. The first will be Thursday the 1st of October and the second will be Monday the 19th of October. Both sessions will be at 7pm. Teams invites will be sent out to yourself.
- Online Application and Sift - You will complete an online application form, which will be reviewed against the skills, experience and behaviours required for the role.
Closing Date: 25/10/2026 - Road Policing Attachment - Minimum of 2 attachments with RPU SCs to better understand the role and requirements followed by a minimum of 2 attachments with RPU regular shift to experience a wider range of jobs, speeds driven, and experience needed.
- Role Play Scenario assessment - To assess your competency when dealing with members of the public, assess their decision making, and use of NDM.
