About the role
As a Dispatcher, you play a key role within the Force Control Room by coordinating police resources and managing incidents in real time.
Unlike Communications Officer roles, which focus on answering calls, or Switchboard roles, which direct enquiries, this role is focused on:
- Managing incidents once they have been created
- Deploying officers and resources
- Making decisions based on risk assessments (THRIVE+)
- Monitoring incidents through to resolution
You will work closely with operational teams to ensure the right response is delivered at the right time, supporting both the public and frontline officers.
How this role is different
It is important to understand how the Dispatcher role differs from other Force Control Room roles:
Communications Officer
- First point of contact for 999 and 101 calls
- Gathers and records information from callers
Switchboard Operator
- Directs calls to the appropriate departments
- Manages general enquiries
Dispatcher
- Manages incidents after initial contact
- Deploys officers and resources
- Makes decisions based on risk and priority
- Oversees incidents through to conclusion
