Join Our Custody Team as a Detention Officer
Ø Locations: York, Scarbourgh & Harrogate
Ø Salary: £25,242 - £29,859 (Scale 3-4) plus weekend working and shift allowance
Ø Progression through the pay scale is linked to a career progression plan
Ø Contract: Permanent / Full Time
Ø Shifts: 12-hour shift pattern covering 24 hours, 7 days a week. Followed by 4 rest days.
Ø Course start date: 3rd March 2027
You do not need to be a Police Officer, and no previous policing experience is required.

Whether you've worked in customer service, healthcare, security, social care, the military, hospitality, education or another people-focused role, you may already have many of the skills we're looking for.

What Does a Detention Officer Do?
As a Detention Officer, you'll help ensure the safety, security and welfare of people in police custody, while supporting the Custody Sergeant in the day-to-day operation of the custody suite.
Your responsibilities will include:
Ø Booking in detainees and carrying out custody procedures, including drug testing, taking DNA samples, photographs and fingerprints.
Ø Monitoring detainee welfare and reporting any concerns or changes in behaviour immediately to the Custody Sergeant.
Ø Following legislation, policies and procedures to ensure detainees are treated lawfully, safely and fairly in line with PACE and Home Office guidance.
Ø Providing administrative support to maintain accurate records and support the effective running of the custody suite.

What Are We Looking For?
This is a challenging but highly rewarding role. We are seeking people who can remain calm under pressure, communicate effectively and work professionally in sometimes demanding situations.
You will need to:
Ø Have good keyboard and IT skills and be willing to learn specialist custody systems and procedures.
Ø Work effectively as part of a team and support colleagues to achieve shared objectives.
Ø Demonstrate strong communication and listening skills.
Ø Show experience of working in a busy or pressurised environment.
Ø Build positive working relationships with colleagues, partners and stakeholders.
Ø Hold a full UK driving licence.
Previous policing experience is not required. Full training will be provided to successful candidates.
Training and Development
Successful applicants will undertake a comprehensive three-week training course (Monday to Friday) delivered by North Yorkshire Police before commencing operational duties.
Following appointment, you will complete a Detention Officer accreditation programme during your probation period. As you achieve accreditation milestones, you will become eligible for pay progression.
Once qualified, Detention Officers may be required to work across other custody suites within North Yorkshire to support operational resilience when required.
