Role Description 

The South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU) is looking for a Principal Analyst keen to progress their career within the Regional Intelligence Unit. 

A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen to become the Principle analyst for the SWROCU - As our Principal Analyst / Intelligence Leader, you will provide strategic leadership for the Intelligence, Analysis and research function ensuring high-quality analytical products inform decision-making at tactical, operational and strategic levels. You will shape and deliver the organisation’s intelligence strategy, lead a team of specialist Analysts and researchers, and work closely with senior leaders, partners and national policing networks to identify emerging threats, risks and opportunities. The role is responsible for driving innovation, continuous improvement and professional standards across the analytical profession, whilst ensuring resources, technology and analytical capabilities are aligned to organisational priorities. You will act as a trusted adviser to senior stakeholders, influencing strategic direction and helping the organisation respond effectively to complex and evolving crime and intelligence challenges. 

SWROCU is a collaboration of police officers and police staff from the five South West regional forces. We’re part of a national network of nine ROCUs covering England and Wales. 

We have more than 20 capabilities that staff and officers work in to Pursue offenders, Protect and Prepare individuals and organisations, and Prevent people from engaging in serious and organised crime. 

Our capabilities are here to advise, to assist, or to fully adopt investigations. 

We work with local forces and national partners to target and disrupt criminals posing the greatest risk of Serious and Organised Criminality (SOC). This includes offenders involved in cyber threats, economic crime, drug conspiracies, modern slavery and human trafficking, and child sexual abuse and exploitation.

Skills, experience and qualifications required 

Qualification   

  • Be qualified to degree level in a relevant subject or equivalent relevant experience  
  • The post holder will be required to hold and maintain IPP Accreditation  
  • Hold a full current driving licence or be able to travel around the force / region area using alternative transport  

Essential  

  • Extensive experience of intelligence analysis processes and intelligence led policing approaches  
  • Extensive experience of structured analytical techniques, inference development and hypothesis testing  Significant experience in management of leading analytical and researcher teams  
  • Strong understanding of the strategic, operational and evidential environment  
  • Proven ability to use a range of communication and influencing techniques and methods to successfully negotiate, collaborate and/or effect change and engage with a diverse range of stakeholders  
  • Significant experience in allocating resources appropriately for the analytical function to make risk-based decisions that deliver effective outcomes within the available budget  
  • Proven experience to deliver change that reshapes the analytical function, to deliver appropriate responses to emerging trends and issues  
  • Ability to lead, develop and motivate a diverse team; creating strong engagement with the function’s performance objectives and with Force values and behaviours.  

 Desirable  

  • Knowledge of relevant investigative legislation (e.g. IPA, CPIA, GDPR).  
  • Previous analytical experience and / or of working within a law enforcement environment  
  • Previous experience of Court and of presenting evidential analytical products  
  • Experience of evidential analysis products

Vetting and safeguarding 

This post is subject to a higher security clearance at MV and SC – Management Vetting and Security Clearance Level.
