PPU are recruiting Police Staff Investigating Officers to work within a dedicated and expanding Post Charge Investigation Team (PCIT), within the Adult Abuse team in the Public Protection Unit, supporting the progression of domestic abuse cases through to court. This role is central to improving case progression and bringing offenders to justice while delivering the best possible outcome for victims.
The role requires well organised and professional individuals with an ability to manage risk, develop investigations, work to deadlines and work closely with internal and external partners.
The Police Staff Investigating officer role will work and be aligned within the core file build team based at two locations (Wednesfield and Lloyd House), however there is an expectation for officers to travel across the force to complete investigative actions, gathering and securing evidence to support criminal investigations into the court process. This is to support all the adult investigation teams based at Perry Barr, Oldbury and Coventry.
You will be line managed by a Sergeant/ Supervisor who will direct actions from compiling case files for court proceeding, obtaining additional evidence from witness testimonies (written statements/ Video recorded interviews following the guidance to achieving best evidence), CCTV collection to obtaining third party material and ensure that enquiries are carried out expeditiously and in accordance with investigation policy.
The role will include working with witness care to build and maintain rapport with vulnerable victims, supporting them through the CJ process.
Key Responsibilities
Case File Management:
- Prepare, review, and submit high-quality evidence files, including digital evidence and CCTV, ensuring they are complete for charging decisions and in line with policy and CPIA.
Statement Taking:
- Interview victims and witnesses to gather evidence, following the guidelines to achieve best evidence in criminal proceedings.
Investigative Action:
- Pursue lines of inquiry, with the retrieval, retention and reviewing of material in accordance with all relevant legislation, (I.E Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, The Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996, Data Protection Act 1998) and force policy procedures.
- Complete CCTV and house-to-house enquires following the investigation strategy
Systems Management:
- Update police database systems (e.g. Connect) with accurate, timely information
- Utilise all appropriate ICT systems to research, produce and submit evidence.
- Any other duties commensurate with the role and band/grade
Location: There are two locations for this role. Please can you ensure you preference your location in your application form. The locations are Wednesfield and Lloyd House.
Please note that the team in Wednesfield will be moving to Wolverhampton in the future.
Hours of work and Flexibility:
- Please note a shift pattern is being introduced for this role that will cover the core hours are Monday to Friday 08:00-20:00. More details will be provided at the interview stage.
- Post holder may be required to work outside these hours from time to time including Bank holidays, taking into account individual circumstances.
- This role may require the post holder to perform duties on a force wide basis
- Requirement to travel out of the force area, where necessary, to progress investigations

Important Information
This is a 2 year fixed term contract until March 2028.
