What you’ll do as a City Police Officer

As a Police Constable, you’ll be at the forefront of policing, making an impact from day one. Your role will include:

  • Engaging face-to-face with the community every day
  • Responding to emergency and non-emergency incidents
  • Taking statements and supporting victims and witnesses
  • Investigating crimes and gathering evidence
  • Preparing reports and case files
  • Conducting searches and making arrests when necessary
  • Working closely with partner agencies to keep the City safe

Training and development

The two-year Police Constable Entry Programme (PCEP) combines:

  • Classroom-based learning
  • Practical, on-the-job operational policing experience

This programme equips you with the skills, confidence and knowledge needed to succeed as a frontline police officer.

Eligibility requirements

At the point of application, you must:

  • Be 17 or over (18 by start of training)
  • Have lived in the UK for at least 3 years
  • Have the right to work in the UK with no restrictions
  • Meet nationality and residency requirements
  • Have no criminal convictions
  • Comply with the Force tattoo policy
  • Hold a UK driving licence (desirable, not essential)

Entry requirements

You must hold:

  • GCSE (or equivalent) English Language and Maths at Grade C / 4 or above

And one of the following:

  • At least two A Levels (A*–C) or an equivalent Level 3 qualification

OR, if you do not hold a Level 3 qualification, substantial additional evidence in public service:

  • Service as a PCSO, Special Constable or Volunteer Police Cadet (minimum 24 months, with IPS where applicable)
  • Previous military or armed forces service (minimum two years within the last five years)

How to apply

Applications are open to candidates wishing to join the City of London Police as a Police Constable.

Anticipated start date: November 2026

The recruitment process includes:

  1. Online application
  2. College of Policing National Sift
  3. Online Assessment Centre
  4. In-force interview
  5. Day 2 Assessment Centre (fitness, fingerprints, DNA, toxicology)
  6. Vetting
  7. Occupational Health
  8. References

If you already hold a valid National Sift or Assessment Centre pass (within 24 months), you may be able to transfer it- please contact us for advice.
