Police Community Support Officer Apprenticeship – Neighbourhood Policing at the Heart of Cheshire

Neighbourhood policing is at the heart of Cheshire Constabulary. It is how we build trust, understand what matters most to local people, prevent harm, and work with communities to keep Cheshire safe.

We are recruiting Police Community Support Officer Apprentices to join our Neighbourhood Policing Teams and play a highly visible, practical and trusted role in communities across the county.

This opportunity is offered as a fixed-term apprenticeship pathway until 31st March 2028, designed to support you through the completion of the Level 4 Diploma in Community Policing Practices while gaining meaningful frontline experience in neighbourhood policing.

As a PCSO Apprentice, you will be part of the team that works closest to the public. You will listen to residents, provide reassurance, support vulnerable people, tackle local concerns, and help solve problems before they escalate.

What you will be doing

Every day as a PCSO Apprentice is different. You will be out in communities, speaking with people, identifying concerns, and supporting practical action to make neighbourhoods safer and stronger.

Your work will include:

• Providing a visible and reassuring presence in local neighbourhoods.
• Building trust with residents, businesses, schools, community groups and partner agencies.
• Listening to local concerns and helping to address anti-social behaviour, community tensions and emerging issues.
• Supporting crime prevention activity and helping people understand how they can keep themselves, their homes and their communities safe.
• Gathering and sharing community intelligence to support wider policing activity.
• Taking part in engagement events, community meetings and local problem-solving activity.
• Using a range of communication methods, including social media and community alert schemes, to keep people informed and connected.
• Supporting safeguarding awareness and helping to identify vulnerability, risk and harm within communities.

What we are looking for

You do not need to have worked in policing before. What matters most is that you care about people, can communicate well, and want to make a positive difference in Cheshire’s communities.

You will bring:

• Strong communication and listening skills.
• The confidence to speak with people from different backgrounds and build positive relationships.
• A calm, fair and professional approach when dealing with challenging situations.
• Good judgement, problem-solving skills and the ability to make appropriate decisions.
• A commitment to public service, inclusion and treating people with respect.
• The ability to work as part of a team while also taking responsibility for your own work and learning.
• A full UK driving licence.

Successful candidates will complete the required PCSO apprenticeship learning and operational training, including the Neighbourhood Policing Programme, and must meet the relevant operational requirements for the role.

About the apprenticeship pathway

This role is offered as a fixed-term PCSO apprenticeship pathway until 31st March 2028. The duration reflects the structured learning, training and workplace experience required to complete the Level 4 Diploma in Community Policing Practices and develop the skills needed to operate confidently in a neighbourhood policing role.

You will begin with induction and initial apprenticeship training at Cheshire Constabulary Headquarters in Winsford before moving into a local policing unit, where you will apply your learning in real community settings with support from experienced colleagues.

During the apprenticeship, you will follow a bespoke shift pattern and receive the appropriate shift allowance in line with the post you are assigned to.
