Job Title: MO7 Taskforce - Mounted Branch Stable Hand/Groom

Salary: The starting salary is £37, 392.38 which includes allowances totalling £3,009 and a 12.5% shift allowance.

The salary is broken down as £30,063 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £32,313. Plus, a 12.5 % shift allowance, location allowance of £2,009 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

Take care of the horses that take care of the people 

London is home to almost nine million people across 32 boroughs. We use every possible means to keep them safe and bring criminals to justice, with the invaluable help of our Mounted Branch. This is your chance to use your equine skills in a vital role with the UK’s largest police service. 

You’ll be part of a team who train and care for Police Horses serving within the City of London. You’ll carry out feeding and management programmes for designated horses, care for those that may be sick or injured, and exercise them according to each one’s level of health and fitness, including riding. 

Since the Mounted Branch undertakes operational deployments across the district, it’s important that you have a strong customer and community focus. You’ll also need to be able to work well as part of a close-knit, dedicated team that plans, organises and solves problems with little supervision. 

Sometimes you’ll be the only contact with professionals like veterinarians, so you’ll have to be able to communicate well in person and in writing. 

Lastly, you’ll ideally have a full UK driving licence, but you’ll certainly have the skills to meet British Horse Society Stage 2 (Stable Manager and Riding) or equivalent and be willing to cover on occasion at other Mounted Branch bases. 

The role will be subject to a riding and practical assessment which will be held on the same day.  During the riding assessment you will be required to provide a demonstration of walk, trot and canter and assessment of a few simple school movements.  

For the practical element you will be required to demonstrate the preparation of a horse for exercise (tacking up etc.).  further details will be released to those invited for the assessment. 

Job Description:  

  • To carry out appropriate feeding and management programmes for designated horses.  
  • To care for sick and injured horses.  
  • Exercise identified horses in the post holders care, either by riding them or otherwise according to each animal’s level of health and fitness. 
  • To undertake tasks as necessary to assist with the efficient operation of the unit.  

Job Requirements:  

  • The Mounted Branch undertakes operational deployments across the MPD in support of the MPS and local objectives.  Therefore, community and customer focus is an important of this role. 
  • The role involves working within a small team environment and the applicant must demonstrate a strong team-working ethic as well as an ability to work unsupervised. At times the applicant will be responsible for the welfare of a large number of horses and needs to demonstrate a willingness to take personal responsibility for making decisions regarding equine and stable related issues. 
  • The applicant must be able to communicate effectively at all levels both verbally and in writing. At times they will be the only point of contact between partners such as veterinary surgeons and other professionals.  
  • The role requires the applicant to be able to effectively plan and organise their workload and show an innovative approach to problem solving. 
  • The applicant must demonstrate the skills necessary to work to the level required to meet British Horse Society Stage 2 (Stable Management and Riding), or equivalent standards. A riding test will form part of the selection process. 
  • This vacancy is for a position at MTE, Moseley however there may be a need to cover stable hand duties at other Mounted branch bases within the MPD such as Hyde Park & Great Scotland Yard.
