We’re looking for dedicated individuals to join Humberside Police in January 2027 as a Special Constable and progress into the Marine Unit. This is a unique opportunity to volunteer your time in a meaningful and impactful way – supporting the safety of our communities and our coastline.

You will initially join as a Special Constable, where you will be a volunteer police officer with the same powers, uniform and protective equipment as regular officers. The role will include undertaking a broad range of policing duties across Humberside, you will have the opportunity to foster positive relationships with diverse communities as well as support the delivery of policing services and enhance public confidence.

As a Special Constable, you’ll receive full training before heading out on patrol, supporting frontline policing. It’s a chance to step away from your usual routine and experience something truly rewarding – every shift brings new challenges, excitement, and the chance to help others.

Once you have successfully completed the training to become a Special Constable, along with gaining Independent Patrol Status ensuring you are a fully competent officer, you will then move directly into the Marine Specialism working alongside Marine Police Officers, supporting them with incidents, patrols and crime.

As a Special Constable in our Marine Unit, you’ll play a vital role in helping safeguard our ports, waterways, and protecting our coastal communities. Your role will assist with proactive patrols along the Humber, to supporting operations in and around our docks and marinas, you’ll help keep people safe both on land and at sea.

As a Marine Special Constable you will:

  • Undertake maritime and coastal policing duties across the Humber region.
  • Patrol waterways, ports and estuary areas alongside trained marine officers.
  • Support local and national policing and partner agencies with maritime incidents.
  • Assist in tackling marine related crime, anti-social behaviour and safeguarding incidents.

Whilst this opportunity is very exciting please be advised that the environment you will operate in can be particularly harsh and requires an enthusiastic candidate who is comfortable with prolonged shifts on the water with limited access to comforts.

Requirements to join as a Marine Special Constable

  • Have previous experience in the maritime environment. Ideally with existing RYA/MCA qualifications relating to navigation, safety and crew operations.
  • Able to pass an annual fitness test to 7.2 MSFT or equivalent and complete an annual swim test.
  • Able to pass an ENG1 Maritime Medical Certificate.

 

Please Note: Important Information and Training Schedule

Please be advised this advert is for you to join as a Special Constable initially and then once you have completed training and become a fully competent officer with Independent Patrol Status you will then specialise to be a Marine Special Constable. The above can take between 6 months to 1 year, possibly longer depending on the commitment you are able to give.

Throughout the process our Marine Protect Unit Supervisor will be in touch to monitor your progress.

Training Schedule for Special Constables

You are required to attend training sessions which will take place during weekday evenings on a Tuesday and Wednesday (over Microsoft teams) and in-person weekend sessions on a Saturday and Sunday. These training sessions must be attended in order to qualify to become a Special Constable. This means giving up your free time and committing to a training schedule of around 15 weeks. – After completing these 15 weeks training you will then be giving a minimum of 16 hours per months to the role.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Be 17 years of age or over to apply and 18 years of age by the time of appointment. There is no upper age limit for applying for Humberside Police.
  • Maintain a good level of physical fitness to pass the fitness test and also be able to pass the medical examination.
  • Comply with our tattoo policy. Please submit clear close-up photos of all tattoos along with descriptions and meanings.
  • Applicants must have resided in the UK for three continuous years immediately prior to application. Any period of travel needs to be less than one year.
  • You must hold unrestricted Right to Work in the UK to apply. Please submit this alongside your application.

  • Precluded Occupations – There may be some restrictions to becoming a Special Constable, such as some occupations (such as Security Officers, Traffic Wardens, etc, please see the full list of occupations attached)

  Recruitment Process and expected timeline:

Application closing date: Sunday 14th June 2026 at 23:55

College of Policing Pre-Sift: July 2026

Applicants successful in being shortlisted will subsequently be invited to attend a national online sift with the College of Policing. Further details regarding the National Sift

Interview:

  • Following the Sift, you will be invited to attend an in-force interview between July and August 2026.

Pre-employment checks

Once you pass the National Sift and Interview stage you will be progressed to the final pre-employment checks

  • Vetting – This means having no criminal convictions (some minor offences may be considered on a case by case basis)
  • Occupational Health Medical – Assessments with our in force Occupational Health Team
  • References, including absences – Employment and/or character
  • Biometric Testing – Finger Prints and DNA
  • Substance Misuse
  • Review of Tattoo’s – Your tattoos will be reviewed as a part of pre employment checks to ensure they do not cause any offence or have any conflicting meanings (If Applicable)
