Salary: The starting salary is £46,985, which includes allowances totalling £3,009.
The salary is broken down as £43,976 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £49,670. Plus, a location allowance of £2,009 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

Join a Unique Marine Team Supporting Frontline Policing
This is not your typical marine engineering role. Based on the River Thames at Wapping Marine Workshop, you will be part of a specialist team responsible for maintaining, servicing and repairing the vessels that support the Metropolitan Police Marine Policing Unit. Every vessel you work on plays a critical role in protecting London's waterways, supporting emergency response, public safety operations, search and rescue activity and national counter-terrorism deployments.
Working on one of the UK's most diverse operational fleets, you'll gain exposure to high-performance RHIBs, Targa patrol vessels, jet-powered craft and specialist marine assets. No two days are the same, with work ranging from routine servicing and advanced diagnostics through to engine rebuilds, drive leg overhauls, warranty repairs and on-water reception tests.

About Wapping Marine Workshop
Wapping Marine Workshop is the Metropolitan Police's dedicated marine maintenance facility. The workshop undertakes all aspects of vessel servicing, mechanical and electrical repairs, diagnostics, inspection and fleet support for the Marine Policing Unit.
The team supports a range of high-profile operations throughout the year, including major public events, specialist policing operations and national counter-terrorism deployments. Alongside planned maintenance, the workshop regularly undertakes complex fault diagnosis, engine rebuilds, warranty repairs, vessel upgrades, reception testing and fleet replacement projects.
The workshop is equipped with specialist lifting equipment, manufacturer diagnostic systems, marine tooling and dedicated facilities to support the delivery of high-quality repairs.
Key Responsibilities
- Vessel Maintenance – Maintain the Marine Policing Unit fleet by carrying out scheduled and unscheduled servicing, maintenance and repairs, ensuring vessels remain safe, reliable and operational. Follow manufacturer repair procedures and use industry-recognised diagnostic equipment to assess mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems.
- Servicing and Repairs – Carry out scheduled 100, 200 and 800-hour servicing across the fleet. Diagnose faults, complete routine and complex repairs, undertake engine overhauls and drive leg rebuilds to maximise fleet availability.
- Reception Testing – Conduct on-water testing following servicing and repairs to ensure vessels are fully operational before returning to service. Work safely as part of a crew while testing vessels under operational conditions.
- Warranty Repairs – Accurately complete manufacturer warranty work, following end-to-end warranty processes and maintaining supporting documentation.
- Inspection and Diagnostics – Visually inspect and test vessels, diagnose electrical, hydraulic and mechanical faults using manufacturer diagnostic equipment and technical information, ensuring repairs meet or exceed manufacturer standards.
- Data and Technical Information – Record all work accurately, complete technical reports where required and interpret wiring diagrams, technical manuals and manufacturer guidance.
- Development and Training – Take responsibility for personal development, maintain knowledge of current marine technologies and legislation and support the development of apprentices and less experienced colleagues.
- Health and Safety – Maintain the highest standards of health and safety, ensuring safe working practices are followed at all times and that work areas and equipment remain in a safe condition.
