Lawyer - Public Protection Unit

With the introduction of Domestic Abuse Protection Orders expected in November 2026 we are seeking a talented Lawyer to join our well established team of police staff and officers in the Public Protection Unit within the Legal Service Department, providing high-quality legal advice, advocacy and representation to Cheshire Constabulary.
About the role …..
- Provide expert legal advice to Cheshire Constabulary and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.
- Manage a varied caseload of operational advisory work and civil protective applications to court.
- Represent clients in court and provide advocacy where appropriate.
- Assess cases and investigations, providing recommendations to senior officers.
- Draft legal documents, policies, procedures and contractual agreements.
- Instruct counsel and other external specialists where required.
- Research and deliver legal training to colleagues, clients and stakeholders.
- Attend partnership meetings and professional working groups to represent organisational interests.
About You
We are looking for a skilled legal professional who can work independently while building strong relationships with clients and colleagues.
You will have:
- A Level 6 qualification relevant to the role of Lawyer with a qualification as a Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive (or equivalent professional experience for a minimum of 2 years).
- Experience managing your own legal caseload and providing legal advice with minimal supervision.
- Experience undertaking legal research and presenting findings clearly and effectively.
- Advocacy experience within a court, tribunal or other judicial setting.
- Strong drafting skills, including legal correspondence, applications, witness statements and advice notes.
- Knowledge of criminal law, civil litigation and enforcement proceedings.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
Knowledge of legislation affecting policing, public protection, enforcement activity or emergency services would be advantageous.
