The Role & Key Responsibilities

From your first day with us you will be part of a policing family making a real difference.

It is our mission to identify and protect vulnerable people, prevent and respond to harm and keep people safe.

Are you highly organised, proactive, and motivated by work that makes a real difference?

Do you enjoy solving problems, supporting others, and keeping fast‑paced teams running smoothly? If so, our Initial Investigations Team (IIT) would love to hear from you.

This is a fantastic opportunity to play a central role in helping us protect vulnerable people, support victims, and ensure our frontline officers have what they need to deliver the best possible service to our communities.

As the Initial Investigations Team Co-Ordinator, you’ll be integral to the department—keeping information flowing and assisting in managing demand. Your work will directly support investigations, help safeguard vulnerable individuals, and contribute to positive outcomes for victims of crime across Sussex.

You will play a vital part in keeping the department running smoothly by building and maintaining Excel spreadsheets and other resource‑management tools that support resourcing decisions in the short, medium, and long term. You’ll also produce daily operational statistics that help supervisors understand demand and deploy resources effectively. A key element of your work will be ensuring that appointments with victims are accurately managed, managing short‑notice changes. You will also also support the triage of incoming demand assessing risk using NDM and THRIVE principles.

Your role will also involve direct contact with victims and members of the public to manage appointments, provide updates, and help resolve issues quickly and professionally. You will contribute to reducing community harm by researching individuals who cause the most risk, summarising patterns of offending, and nominating suitable candidates for crime reduction initiatives. In addition, you will process Police National Database facial identification requests, support partner information‑sharing and collate data that informs civil orders aimed at preventing reoffending.

To keep information flowing across the team, you will monitor inboxes, allocating tasks and escalating urgent issues as needed, while also ensuring our Teams channels remain organised and current. You’ll help develop the department by arranging and coordinating CPD opportunities and supporting recruitment processes, including scheduling interviews and managing the associated administrative tasks.

Throughout, you will maintain high professional standards by keeping your knowledge of policies and procedures up to date, identifying personal training needs, completing mandatory training, and carrying out any other duties that support the wider function of the department.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to negotiate, influence, and communicate clearly with a wide range of people including delivering difficult messages sensitively.

  • A willingness to undertake training to become proficient in key policing systems, including STORM, Niche, NICE, and other multimedia or data‑management tools.
  • Emotional resilience and the ability to handle sensitive, distressing, or complex information while maintaining absolute discretion and professionalism.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to plan, prioritise, and manage competing demands independently.
  • Confidence to act autonomously and make informed decisions, while also working collaboratively as part of a team to achieve shared goals.
  • The ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues, partner agencies, and wider stakeholders.
