Communications Operator 2026 Intakes
Ready to make a real difference? We’re recruiting!
We are recruiting a pool of candidates for our 2026 intakes commencing over the next six months, with applications being shortlisted on a weekly basis.
Our Communications Operators are often the first point of contact for members of the public in need of help. From emergency calls to non‑emergency enquiries, you will gather critical information and ensure the right police resources are deployed quickly and effectively across the county.
The Role
This is a 24/7 operational role, working a core shift pattern that covers days, nights, weekends, and public holidays. Based in our fast‑paced Force Communications Room at Police Headquarters, Welwyn Garden City, no two shifts — and no two calls — are ever the same.
You’ll handle a wide range of calls, some routine, and others highly challenging. Whatever the situation, you will need to remain calm, compassionate, and professional, thinking on your feet to reassure callers while obtaining accurate information to support the appropriate police response.
Don’t worry — you won’t be doing this alone. You’ll receive extensive initial training alongside ongoing on‑the‑job support to give you the confidence and skills needed to thrive in this demanding yet rewarding environment.
What We Offer
- A busy, operational role where your actions genuinely protect people from harm
- Comprehensive training and ongoing support
- An attractive starting salary of £34,329 (including shift allowance), rising to £40,893 after three years
- The opportunity to build a long‑term career within policing and public service
This is more than just a job — it’s a chance to make a real difference when it matters most to the people of Hertfordshire.
