Handyperson / Driver – Transport Services

Could you help us to keep our busy Avonmouth vehicle workshop running smoothly?  Are you looking for a role that supports our vehicle technicians to keep our emergency vehicle fleet on the road?

An opportunity has become available within our Transport Services Department for a Handyperson / Driver to join our team.  You will work alongside our team of vehicle technicians to assist with the general maintenance of our workshop and fleet from our Avonmouth workshop. 

In this role, you’ll work alongside another Handyperson and be ready to turn your hand to anything (with the right training and support, of course).  You may be completing general maintenance in our workshop, or assisting with loading and unloading deliveries, or assisting with the delivery and collection of vehicles across the UK.  You’ll play a critical role keeping our workshop safe and maximising vehicle uptime.  

 

Role Description

As our Handyperson / Driver, you’ll support colleagues across the department.  You’ll be responsible for the upkeep of our building and assist with tasks to keep our vehicles o the road as much as we can.  You don’t need any experience of working in a workshop environment, but being able to turn your hand to general maintenance building repairs is essential.

 

Main Responsibilities

  • Undertaking minor maintenance of police vehicles/cycles, including changing wheels, light bulbs, checks of fuel, oil, water, tyres and regular cleaning (washing and vacuuming).
  • Ensuring that the workshop area is clean (whilst we have a cleaning contract for our office areas, our Handyperson is responsible for the cleanliness of the workshop area, including clearing spillages, emptying bins etc.)
  • Vehicle movements in the yard, to ensure that the parking area is suitably arranged
  • Conducting our weekly fire alarm and safety checks (including completing regular Health & safety checks, regular fire tests, regular checks of first aid kits and eye wash stations etc.)
  • Carrying out minor repairs, maintenance and improvements to offices, buildings, grounds, services, vehicles, and equipment, including general decorating (not at height) where required
  • Co-ordinating the collection of general and secure waste from site in readiness for disposal via licensed contractors.
  • De-kitting vehicles of any sensitive equipment to include the removal of radio equipment, Telematics and Wi-Fi units (as trained).
  • Undertaking the hand-over of vehicles at the workshop, provide basic awareness instruction regarding controls, features, fittings etc.
  • Undertaking general driving duties as directed to include conveyance of passengers, goods, equipment, waste, materials, and vehicles.  This may include occasional national travel. 
  • Assisting with receiving goods / deliveries and store items to our workshop as directed by the Stores department, assisting with their distribution to all sites, as required.  This may require the use of a forklift (we’ll train the right applicant for this).
  • Monitor and maintain stock levels of vehicle, facilities or janitorial stores, re-ordering goods and equipment when required.
  • Taking and reading gas, electricity, solar and fuel oil meters and diesel/petrol levels by dip/pump and report findings to line manager.
  • Escorting or supervising visitors and contractors to our site to maintain safety and security.
  • Liaising with our facilities team to record and report building defects or site maintenance requests

 

Security Vetting

It is the policy of the Avon & Somerset Constabulary to conduct security checks on all staff in line with the National Vetting Policy.

 

Additional information:

Working Hours:

The working hours will be core office hours, however, start and end times can be agreed between 0730-1700 to suit the role holder and the Constabulary.  This is a part-time position over three days, which can be agreed with the role holder but must include a Friday.

Reporting Line:

This role directly reports to a Workshop Controller.

This role will be based at our Avonmouth workshop.  Please check that you can travel to the workshop as public transport is limited at this location.
