About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Evidential Property Officer within the Assets Department, Crime Standards and Justice. Based at Melksham, this part time (18.5 hours) role will require occasional travel between the other two divisional property stores at Salisbury and Swindon as need demands.

The team act as custodians responsible for the management of all of police evidentially seized property exhibits, retained as part of a policing investigation. Whilst the list is not exhaustive, this will include the safe handling of items relating serious criminal offences, such as, cash, drugs, weapons and forensic samples. Training will be provided.

This role is a very busy and demanding one and will be supported by an Assets Supervisor. Using police databases, you will be required to process all incoming and outing exhibit items. You’ll also be required to make well informed decisions regarding the retention/disposal of property exhibits and to promote the use of photographic images with a view to eventually reduce the volume of exhibits held across the three stores / force.

To use legislation such as Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996 (CPIA), Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE) to review longer term exhibits and dispose of if required. They also provide appropriate and expert advice to police officers, police staff and to members of the public, on matters concerning property and CSI forensic exhibits as and when required.

About you and your experience

To succeed in this role, it’s essential to possess good communications skills, both verbal and written. Good organisational skills and the ability to demonstrate a high degree of accuracy in respect of work undertaken. An ability to problem-solve along with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team and with the way in which the unit operates and the constant demands needs to have the ability to adapt to changes in systems and processes.

You will also have:

  • Previous experience working in a secure and confidential environment
  • Proven administrative experience
  • Previous experience of dealing directly with the public
  • Good time management with the ability to prioritise a demanding workload whilst adhering to deadlines
  • Understanding of confidentiality and GDPR/Data Protection/Freedom of Information (FOI) issues
