Digital Media Advisor - Bridgwater

We are advertising for a permanent vacancy at our Bridgwater location. Digital intelligence/evidence plays a vital role in nearly every criminal investigation as new technology rapidly develops. As a Digital Media Advisor (DMAs) within our Criminal Investigation Directorate (CID) you are responsible for providing digital advice and guidance to Detectives investigating serious and complex investigations. You will work within a supportive team of officer and police staff within the Cyber Team and CID in a role at the cutting edge of the capture, preservation, processing and analysis of data that will help protect the communities of Avon and Somerset.

You will need to have a good level of knowledge about digital technology and full training will be provided regarding extracting data from a variety of digital media devices such as mobile phones and routers.

Our DMA’s also interview victims, witnesses and suspects, fully explore all evidential enquiries, from CCTV to digital device downloads as well as compiling case papers to prosecute offenders and bring them to justice.

Main responsibilities:

  • Identifying and securing devices and resources that will form part of investigations.
  • Use a variety of techniques to extract relevant data and examine it, Identifying evidence that points towards or away from criminality.
  • Carry out triage examinations of digital devices, including kiosk level one phone downloads, manual review of handsets and conducting router examinations.
  • Gather intelligence through relevant open-source methods to optimise available evidence and assist investigating officers.
  • Interviewing witnesses and suspects
  • Provide high quality written and oral evidence that can be presented to the Crown Prosecution Service and at Court.
  • Apply for search warrants and present supporting evidence to Magistrates. Attend search warrants and crime scenes, in order to enhance digital evidence capture capability.
  • Provide advice and guidance to victims of cybercrime to safeguard from repeat victimisation.

Skills and experience:

  • Experience of interrogating, maintaining and utilising data on a wide range of digital devices.
  • An understanding of network processes and what digital evidence may be available to assist an investigation.
  • Experience of preparing reports and presenting information in a variety of formats.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with good verbal and written communication.
  • Proven decision making and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to work within a highly pressurised working environment and to tight deadlines.
  • You will need to either hold Professionalising Investigations Programme, Level 1 accreditation or be willing to attain this qualification. 

This role involves working a 16/7 shift pattern embedded within the CID Directorates that include earlies (0800-1700) and lates (1400-2300). As such the role will be subject Shift and weekend allowances in addition to advertised salary.

Additional information:

  • You must hold a full current driving license with the ability to travel around the force area as you may be required to work at different locations at short notice.
  • This role is based within your work location at Bridgwater but you will be required to work at other locations across the force area.
