Description of Department:
You will work as part of the Digital Forensic Unit using a range of tools to perform imaging and extraction on digital evidence:
- To conduct laboratory based examinations of items/exhibits to support investigations. Ensure integrity and continuity of items by correct handling, storage, documentation.
- To utilise a range of hardware and software to produce evidential and working copies of seized devices and digital media evidence.
- To provide evidential statements and attend court to present evidence of work undertaken.
- To participate in police and agency led operations, working within authority guidelines and carrying out tasks necessary for the successful implementation of the operation.
- To participate in activities which underpin our accreditation to ISO 17025 and the Forensic Science Regulator’s Code of Practice, including internal auditing and competency assessments
The Digital Forensic Unit is part of the Directorate of Forensic Services and provides digital forensic support to investigations across all crime types. This does include the review of sensitive or distressing material for which support is provided.
Purpose of the Role:
To interrogate digital devices or data as part of the investigative process, providing support to all City of London Police departments as part of a wider forensic service. You will be copying/extracting and or processing digital data as part of Police Investigations using a variety of tools for which training is provided.
To provide effective forensic expertise that is professional, readily accessible and cost effective in order to support the investigative process from initial case acceptance to conclusion. To support investigating officers through the seizure of digital storage equipment, forensic data recovery and subsequent forensic handling of digital data and evidence including the imaging of computer material.
Desirable Criteria
Knowledge, experience, expertise in digital investigation
Skills
- Ability to analyse data in order to identify and recover key evidence, patterns and/or trends
- Ability to conduct briefings and present information
- Computer literacy general capability in the use of the MS Office suite
Knowledge
- Relevant legislation and codes of practice
Experience
- Seizure of data storage equipment (computers/laptops/tablets/mobile phones)
- Data recovery and handling
- Gathering, recording, storing, accessing and sharing of information
- Laboratory/office based examination of items
The application and interview will be tested under Level 1 of the College of Policing Competency and Values Framework.
