As a Detention Officer, you will be the first point of contact for both Police Officers and detainees entering custody. We have Custody facilities at both Swindon and Melksham. You will provide highest standards of care for people who are detained and ensure that they are safely managed throughout their detention following arrest.
What Will I Be Doing?
No two days are the same as a Detention Officer. This demanding yet highly rewarding role offers a variety of responsibilities, including:
- Supporting Police Officers bringing detainees into custody and completing initial documentation and searches to maintain a safe custody facility
- Providing a kind and non-judgemental service to individuals ensuring fair treatment and access to their rights
- Managing the care of detainees throughout their detention
- Taking DNA samples, obtaining fingerprints and documenting arrests
- Working closely with a range of professionals including healthcare providers, mental health staff, interpreters and solicitors
- Prepare and serve food and drinks as required for detainees
- Monitor the custody suite environment
- Perform regular scheduled checks on detained persons in cells and notify the Custody Sergeant of any changes in behaviour or well-being of detainees ensuring that welfare concerns are identified

- Administrative skills including the ability to maintain up to date and accurate records
- Ability to learn and apply relevant policies, procedures and legislation
- Ensure you act in a confidential manner with sensitive information
Are You Eligible?
- You must have a FULL UK driving license.
- You must be aged 18 or older.
- You must be a British citizen, an EC/EEA national, or a Commonwealth citizen or foreign national with no restrictions on your stay in the UK.
- You need a minimum of three years of continuous residential history in the UK to meet vetting requirements.
Salary and Allowances:
- Annual salary: £40,035 to £41,235 including allowances. (After initial training Detention Officers receive a basic salary of £29,844 to £30,738, 20% unsocial hours allowance and weekend working allowance)
- Shift pattern includes days, evenings, nights and weekends with allowances for shift work.
