About the role
We are looking for a confident and motivated Designing Out Crime Officer to provide specialist advice on how the design and management of places can prevent crime, antisocial behaviour and the fear of crime.
Working with local authorities, architects, developers, planners and policing teams, you will review planning applications and development proposals, identify potential risks and recommend practical and sustainable solutions. You will promote recognised crime prevention principles and NPCC-approved initiatives, including Secured by Design standards.
You will act as a key point of contact for Wiltshire Police on designing out crime and the built environment. This will include undertaking site visits and environmental visual audits, contributing to structured problem-solving activity, and representing the Force at internal, partnership and regional meetings.
This is a role where relationships and professional influence are important. You will need to communicate specialist information clearly, work effectively with a wide range of organisations and constructively challenge proposals where they could create or increase crime, disorder or antisocial behaviour risks.
You will also maintain accurate records, report on activity and outcomes, and keep up to date with developments in planning, legislation, security standards and crime prevention practice.
The role is designated as agile, with Devizes Headquarters as the main work location. It is primarily a Monday to Friday role, although some flexibility will be required to attend meetings or events outside normal working hours. Travel across Wiltshire will be required, so you must have access to a vehicle or be able to make suitable alternative arrangements.
The successful applicant will be required to complete the Level 5 Diploma in Designing Out Crime, if they do not already hold it, and maintain their specialist accreditation through annual Continuous Professional Development.
Essential Criteria
You should be able to demonstrate:
- Strong communication and influencing skills, including the ability to provide clear advice, present a logical case and constructively challenge proposals.
- Experience of developing effective working relationships with partner organisations and a range of stakeholders.
- The ability to assess information, identify risks and recommend practical solutions that address underlying problems.
- A willingness and ability to complete the Level 5 Diploma in Designing Out Crime and maintain the required annual professional development.
- The ability to manage a varied workload, produce clear written reports and travel across Wiltshire as required.
Desirable
It would be beneficial if you can also demonstrate:
- A Level 5 Diploma in Designing Out Crime or recognised crime prevention training.
- Experience of applying designing out crime principles, Secured by Design standards or another approach to crime prevention through environmental design.
- Knowledge or experience of local authority planning, development control or reviewing planning applications.
- Experience of working with architects, planners, developers, housing providers or community safety partnerships.
- The ability to interpret architectural drawings, development plans or technical specifications.
- Experience of developing or delivering activity to prevent or reduce crime, antisocial behaviour or other community safety risks
