We are seeking a specialist professional to help shape safer places through the thoughtful design of the built environment.
About the RoleWe are seeking a Designing Out Crime Officer to provide expert advice on the built environment, influencing development from pre-planning through to full development control. You will work closely with police colleagues, local authorities, and professional partners to reduce crime, fear of crime, anti-social behaviour and disorder through effective design and planning.
What You’ll Be Doing- Providing specialist advice to architects, planners, developers and designers on crime prevention and security standards, including NPCC-approved initiatives such as Secured by Design and Safer Parking.
- Reviewing planning applications, identifying crime and security risks, and preparing consultation responses and reports.
- Influencing local authority planning policies, local plans and guidance to embed crime prevention principles.
- Representing policing interests in planning forums, problem-solving groups and consultations.
- Working collaboratively with partners including Counter Terrorism Security Advisors, local authorities and internal policing teams.
- Supporting national and local crime reduction initiatives and maintaining accurate records and reports.
This role plays a critical part in creating safe, secure and sustainable communities. By influencing how places are designed and developed, you will help prevent crime before it happens, reduce fear of crime, and support public confidence in policing and the wider built environment.
What We’re Looking For- Experience or strong knowledge of crime prevention, planning, design or related built environment disciplines.
- The ability to influence and engage confidently with a wide range of partners and stakeholders.
- Strong analytical and written skills, with the ability to produce clear, professional reports.
- A commitment to professional standards, ethics and continuous development, including completing accredited training within the first 12 months.
- An understanding of health and safety requirements when working on site.
