Job Title: Designing Out Crime (DOCO) - Supervisor
Salary: The starting salary is £48,995, which includes allowances totalling £3,009.
The salary is broken down as £45,986 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £54,863. Plus, a location allowance of £2,009 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.
Location: Bromley
The DOCO Supervisor provides specialist leadership and technical expertise in crime prevention through environmental design. The role ensures the delivery of high-quality professional practice across the Designing Out Crime (DOC) function, supervising DOCO staff within their designated hub and leading effective partnerships with local planning authorities, developers, architects, and other key stakeholders. Through targeted interventions, the post holder works to reduce crime aligned to MPS priorities identified within the organisation’s Crime Prevention Strategy, influencing the built environment, planning policy, and development standards across London.
Probation period: 12 months, with the expectation that the Level 3 qualification is completed and signed off as competent by the Police Crime Prevention Academy, and that work towards the Level 5 qualification has commenced before the end of the probationary period.
Applicants must be willing to travel to support direct reports across the south with site visits where required at Bromley, Lewisham, Lambeth, Southwark, Greenwich, Sutton and Tower Hamlets.
Due to business reasons please be aware there is a tenure period of two years for this role post qualification. This will be confirmed at the time of posting, and it is the expectation that normally the officer or staff member will be able to commit to the tenure, as a minimum. Tenure agreements are subject to annual review and may be changed at any time for reasons other than career development, such as considerable investment in training.”

The DOCO Supervisor will deliver high-quality leadership and oversight, promoting continuous professional development and operational excellence across the team as follows.
- Leadership, Supervision & Governance
- Supervise and support DOCOs within the allocated London hub, providing guidance, decision-making and performance oversight.
- Conduct monthly one-to-one meetings with direct reports and hold weekly team meetings to ensure tasking, coordination and accountability.
- Maintain an up-to-date CPD portfolio and oversee CPD compliance for hub staff.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive hub records of activity, outcomes and recommendations; provide management reports to support strategic decision-making and organisational learning.
- Ensure all DOCO activity complies with force policy, NPCC guidance and agreed MOUs, including those with Counter Terrorism Security Officers.
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design
- Support direct reports in providing specialist, evidence-based advice on the security, design and refurbishment of developments to reduce opportunities for crime, disorder and ASB.
- Promote NPCC-approved initiatives, including Secured by Design, and encourage adoption of recommended standards and specifications.
- Triage all requests for crime prevention advice, referring any matters falling outside the scope of the Crime Prevention Strategy to the Unit Inspector, and produce corporately endorsed guidance for officers, partners, and members of the public.
Planning, Architecture & Development Engagement
- Support direct reports in liaising with architects, developers and designers to embed Designing Out Crime principles from concept through to implementation.
- Support direct reports in reviewing planning applications to identify risk and provide intervention or escalation as appropriate.
- Support direct reports in engaging with Local Authority planning departments to influence the inclusion of crime reduction as a core development principle.
- Act as the focal point for influencing Local Authority use of Section 106 and CIL funds to support local crime prevention priorities.
Partnership Working & External Representation
- Under the direction of the Unit Inspector, represent the organisation in consultations with external partners on planning policy, legislation, and situational crime-prevention strategies.
- Under the direction of the Unit Inspector, participate in regional problem-solving forums with neighbouring forces to share best practice and address emerging DOC issues.
- Under the direction of the Unit Inspector build and maintain effective relationships with academic institutions and external subject-matter experts in crime-reduction research to support MPS priorities.
Specialist Schemes & Operational Responsibilities
