Data Protection Research/Disclosure Officer

About the Role

Lincolnshire Police is seeking a motivated and detail‑focused individual to join our Data Protection Unit. In this vital role, you will provide high‑quality administrative and research support to the Data Protection Supervisor, ensuring we meet our legal and ethical obligations in line with data protection legislation.

You will embody the Force values and uphold the principles of the Code of Ethics, supporting the delivery of the highest professional standards across the policing profession.

Key Responsibilities

Legal Compliance & Advice

  • Provide expert advice and guidance to ensure full compliance with the Data Protection Act 2018 and other relevant legislation.
  • Support operational needs through specialist knowledge, established policies, and defined procedures.

Information Requests & Disclosure

  • Respond to requests under the Data Protection Act 2018, Freedom of Information Act 2000, Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012, and other disclosure protocols and MOUs.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of all current and emerging routes of access.

Data Retrieval & Redaction

  • Search and interrogate Lincolnshire Police information systems to retrieve relevant files and data.
  • Liaise with internal departments and officers as required.
  • Assess documents for disclosure, apply redactions, and prepare formal response letters outlining lawful bases and rationale.

Professional Conduct

  • Deliver a professional service and maintain confidentiality and integrity when handling sensitive or confidential information.

Mentoring & Team Support

  • Mentor and support junior or new members of the Data Protection Unit, providing development and shadowing opportunities.

Financial Responsibilities

  • Calculate costs and submit invoices for disclosures in accordance with NPCC Charging Guidelines.

Publication Scheme Management

  • Ensure compliance with the Force Publication Scheme and prioritise high‑interest topics through internal collaboration.

Enquiries & Public Interaction

  • Respond to phone calls, emails, written enquiries, and in‑person queries from members of the public, police officers/staff, and partner agencies.
  • Guide individuals on appropriate routes of access and explain relevant legislation.

Training & Communication

  • Assist with delivering talks, training sessions, and departmental briefings on data protection and freedom of information.

Continuous Professional Development

  • Stay up to date with legislation, NPCC guidance, and emerging trends or media publications.
  • Represent Lincolnshire Police at regional meetings, distance‑learning events, and through engagement with external agencies.

Internal Reviews & ICO Support

  • Conduct independent internal reviews for FOI requests.
  • Assist the Data Protection Supervisor with correspondence relating to ICO complaints.

Departmental Flexibility

  • Support colleagues in other areas of the department during peak periods as required, with suitable training.
