About the role
As a Communications Data Investigations Single Point of Contact (SPoC), you will play a critical role in safeguarding the public by enabling the lawful acquisition and use of communications data in support of investigations. Acting as both a specialist advisor and a “guardian and gatekeeper,” you will ensure compliance with legislation while directly contributing to life-at-risk cases, serious crime investigations and intelligence operations. This is an opportunity to work at the forefront of digital investigations, where your expertise will shape operational decisions and deliver real-world impact.
What you will be doing
- Providing expert advice to investigators on the lawful, necessary and proportionate use of communications data in line with legislation and codes of practice
- Reviewing and quality-assuring applications to ensure compliance with the Investigatory Powers Act and minimisation of collateral intrusion
- Acting as the key liaison between investigators, authorising officers and telecommunications operators to facilitate data acquisition
- Identifying, acquiring and interpreting communications data to support investigations, intelligence development and crime prevention
- Advising decision-makers on risk, necessity and proportionality prior to authorisation of applications
- Maintaining accurate records and audit trails in line with legal and procedural requirements
About you and your experience
- Experience working within a legal or regulatory framework, with a strong understanding of necessity, proportionality and data protection principles
- Ability to analyse complex information and provide clear, defensible advice to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Strong attention to detail and experience in quality assurance, compliance or audit processes
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, including working with internal teams and external partners
- Knowledge of relevant legislation (e.g. Investigatory Powers Act, Data Protection)
- Accredited SPoC status or experience in communications data, digital investigations, or telecommunications environments. The successful candidate will be expected to attend a 2 week SPoC course within the first 3-6 months of employment. This is 1 week of online teaching with the followed week being residential at the College of Policing in Ryton.
