Job Title: User Centred Design Manager

Salary: The starting salary is £48,995, which includes allowances totalling £3,009.

The salary is broken down as £45,986 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £54,863. Plus, a location allowance of £2,009 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

The User Centred Design (UCD) team is a small, diverse and ambitious team that work with internal and external users to understand problems, test practical solutions, and put people at the heart of design and decision making. It is part of the Integrated Design and Delivery Team (IDD) in the Met’s Strategy and Investment Group. Some of our current work focuses on developing a new Victims’ Strategy informed by an end-to-end Victim Journey, improving local Community Meetings and maximizing productivity through flexibility.

The User Centred Design Manager champions and implements effective experimental change delivery, working with colleagues to understand operational problems; quickly developing practical solutions into viable plans of action; identifying the most appropriate route to scale the most impactful solutions in support of A New Met for London. You will be supporting teams to develop their expertise and capability to a high standard, making sure problem statements are clear, user-led research has been conducted, and we are generating learning and benefit for the Met. 

Key Responsibilities:  

  • Champion and implement effective experimental change, ensuring outputs are delivered effectively and flexibly. Work with Strategy and Investment and other change teams to ensure a complementary mix of delivery approaches 
  • Manage communication and engagement with a range of stakeholders, developing and maintaining key relationships and working in partnership to resolve problems to benefit internal and external users, victims, operational policing and the MPS 
  • Support the building and sustaining of capacity and capability within the User Centred Design Team to deliver impactful, user-led innovations for the benefit of the Met and public 
  • Support the senior manager to deliver a complex series of change initiatives, including set-up, management and delivery, ensuring that collectively they address problems and priorities and meet all appropriate processes, standards and reporting requirements    
  • Support identifying, managing and resolving risks, tracking and managing costs and benefits, providing reports as required, and ensuring all outputs meet necessary requirements    
  • Deputise for the senior manager where needed, with authority to make delegated decisions, and be the key contact for senior stakeholders

This is expected to take place within 1 to 2 weeks of the closing date. Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to interview, which will take place within the 2 weeks following the sift. The interview will follow a structured competency-based format, assessing candidates against the key requirements of the role. As part of the interview process, candidates will also be asked to deliver a presentation, followed by questions from the panel.
