Assistant Chief Constable

The Chief Constables of Norfolk and Suffolk Constabularies are seeking to appoint an outstanding Assistant Chief Constable to work across both forces, contributing to the delivery of their shared vision and strategic priorities.

This is a rare and demanding senior leadership opportunity, suited to an exceptional officer with a strong record of strategic leadership in complex, high-profile policing environments. Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced senior police officers who can demonstrate success in leading diverse operational and specialist functions at scale.

The Role:

The successful candidate will be responsible for Joint Specialist Crime and Capabilities and Joint Specialist Operations. These commands play a critical role in protecting the public by preventing and investigating serious and complex threat and harm, while providing high-quality specialist support to local policing.

This role requires rigorous, innovative, and ethical leadership, with a strong focus on collaboration, performance, and public confidence across both Norfolk and Suffolk.

The successful applicant can apply to hold the role within either Norfolk or Suffolk and the terms and conditions of the appointment will be the same. However, visibility will be expected across both counties.

About You:

This opportunity is open to:

Existing Assistant Chief Constables seeking a lateral (level transfer) appointment, or

Chief Superintendents and Superintendents seeking promotion.

You will be an inclusive and values-driven leader, capable of delivering cultural change within a complex, matrixed organisation. You will demonstrate an agile and adaptive leadership style and the ability to communicate a clear, consistent, and inspiring vision.

Strong collaboration skills are essential, as the post-holder will work in close partnership across both forces, with chief officer teams, stakeholders, and external partners.

Eligibility

To be eligible for substantive appointment, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

Successfully completed the Senior Police National Assessment Centre (Senior PNAC) and the Strategic Command Course (SCC); or

Successfully completed the Executive Leaders Programme (ELP) (Cohorts 1 and 2); or

For Cohorts 3 onwards, demonstrated the required baseline standard at the ELP Development Centre and successfully completed the ELP.

Applicants who have not yet met the ELP baseline standard and/or completed the programme may be appointed on a temporary basis.

Officers appointed temporarily must commence the ELP within 12 months of appointment or at the next available opportunity if not already enrolled. Any officer who does not achieve the required standard at the ELP Development Centre or during the programme will be withdrawn and revert to their substantive rank as soon as practicable.

On successful completion of the ELP, temporary appointees may be substantively appointed without further selection process.
