The Opportunity

Are you an experienced Applications Engineer looking for a role where your expertise directly supports frontline emergency services?

North Yorkshire Police are seeking a skilled and motivated Applications Engineer to join our Applications & Development Team.

In this vital role, you will help design, develop and support business-critical applications that enable our police officers, fire crews and support staff to work effectively and efficiently. Working within a collaborative team of specialists, you will contribute to delivering secure, reliable and innovative technology solutions that support the delivery of essential public services across North Yorkshire.

Main responsibilities:

  • Support the development and delivery of our applications strategy and roadmap.
  • Design, implement and maintain secure, robust and highly available application solutions.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into effective technical solutions.
  • Support application incidents, problem resolution and service improvements.
  • Contribute to projects from initial design through to implementation and transition into business-as-usual support.
  • Liaise with suppliers and third-party providers to ensure services deliver the required outcomes.
  • Promote innovation and identify opportunities to improve business systems and processes.
  • Maintain application security, resilience and compliance standards.
  • Produce and maintain high-quality technical documentation.
  • Act as a subject matter expert, sharing knowledge and supporting colleagues across the ICT function.
  • Participate in an on-call rota providing 24-hour service support when required.

What we’re looking for:

We're looking for a technically capable and customer-focused professional who enjoys solving complex problems and delivering high-quality solutions.

Essential:

  • Experience working with enterprise application systems within a medium to large organisation.
  • Experience implementing and supporting application solutions throughout their lifecycle.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills within a technical service environment.
  • Experience designing, installing and supporting highly available solutions such as web farms, clustering and load balancing.
  • Experience working with:

  • SQL knowledge for troubleshooting and problem resolution.
  • Experience managing technical projects from initiation through to delivery and support.
  • The ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience producing clear and comprehensive technical documentation.
  • ITIL Foundation Certificate in Service Management.
  • HNC/BTEC qualification in Computing or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.

Desirable:

  • Experience within the public sector, policing, fire and rescue services, or another emergency services environment.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Enterprise Agreements.
  • Understanding of cloud-based architectures and scalability options.
  • Experience automating administrative tasks using PowerShell, VBScript or similar tools.
  • Project management knowledge or qualifications such as PRINCE2, MSP, Agile or Scrum.
  • Experience supporting Microsoft 365 technologies, including SharePoint Online and Microsoft Teams.
  • SharePoint administration, configuration, development or migration experience.
