The Opportunity
As an Application Support Engineer, you will play an important role in supporting, maintaining and improving the applications used by North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and the Office of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner.
Technology is integral to how we serve our communities, from receiving an emergency call through to supporting frontline teams responding to incidents. Our ICT services help ensure that police officers, firefighters and support staff have access to reliable, secure and effective systems that enable them to carry out their critical roles.
Working within the ICT function, you will support a diverse range of business applications throughout their lifecycle. You will work closely with colleagues across the organisations to understand business requirements, translate these into effective technical solutions, and configure, maintain and improve applications to meet operational needs.
This is an opportunity to combine technical expertise, problem-solving and stakeholder engagement, helping to deliver secure, resilient and continually improving digital services that directly support policing, fire and rescue services.
Main responsibilities
As an Application Support Engineer, you will:
- Support the development and delivery of the applications strategy and roadmap.
- Design, implement, configure and maintain secure, robust and highly available application solutions.
- Work closely with stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into effective technical solutions.
- Diagnose and resolve application incidents and problems, identifying opportunities to improve service performance and reliability.
- Contribute to projects throughout the application lifecycle, from initial requirements and solution design through to implementation and transition into business-as-usual support.
- Work with suppliers and third-party providers to resolve issues and ensure services meet agreed business and operational requirements.
- Identify opportunities to improve applications, business processes and the experience of users through innovation and continuous improvement.
- Maintain appropriate application security, resilience, access controls and compliance requirements.
- Produce and maintain clear, accurate and high-quality technical documentation.
- Act as a subject matter expert for supported applications, sharing knowledge and providing technical guidance to colleagues across ICT.
What we’re looking for:
We’re looking for a technically capable, customer-focused and proactive professional who enjoys solving problems, working with others and delivering reliable technology solutions.
You’ll be comfortable working with enterprise applications in a complex environment, combining strong technical skills with the ability to understand business needs and communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
You don’t need to know every system we use from day one. We’re looking for someone with a strong technical foundation, a willingness to learn and the ability to apply their knowledge to new technologies and challenges.
Essential
You’ll bring:
- Experience of supporting enterprise applications within a medium to large or similarly complex organisation.
- Experience of implementing, configuring and supporting application solutions throughout their lifecycle.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills within a technical service environment.
- Experience of designing, implementing or supporting resilient and highly available solutions, such as web farms, clustering and load balancing.
- A good working knowledge of SQL, including its use in application troubleshooting and problem resolution.
- Experience of contributing to or managing technical projects from initial requirements and design through to implementation and transition into support.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience of producing clear, accurate and comprehensive technical documentation.
Desirable
It would also be beneficial if you have:
- Experience of working within the public sector, policing, fire and rescue, or another emergency services environment.
- Knowledge and experience of Microsoft SharePoint Online.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Power Apps, Power Automate and associated Microsoft Power Platform technologies.
- Experience of using ShareGate.
- Experience of Microsoft Teams administration.
