Our Infrastructure & Cloud Services team provides technical support for a range of critical business systems including Microsoft Azure, Windows Server Operating Systems, Server Hardware, Virtualisation Platforms, SAN Storage & Fibre Channel networks, Data Backup Solutions, and Network Infrastructure.
Avon and Somerset Police rely on technology to deliver effective policing to our communities. Our Information Technology Directorate is made up of dedicated IT professionals who ensure that our systems and services directly support frontline policing.
This role is predominantly home‑based, with a current expectation to attend the office once a week with the wider team.
Key Responsibilities
Cloud & Infrastructure Support:
Microsoft Azure
- Design, implement, manage and maintain Azure workloads, virtual machines, storage accounts, networking components, security configurations, and related Azure resources.
- Monitor and optimise cloud resources for performance, reliability, and cost efficiency.
Windows Server Operating Systems
- Install, configure, and administer Windows Server environments.
- Perform patching, upgrades, performance optimisation, and issue resolution.
Server Hardware
- Maintain on‑premises server hardware, including lifecycle management, firmware updates, diagnostics, and vendor coordination.
Virtualisation Platforms
- Manage and optimise VMware environments, ensuring high availability and efficient resource usage.
- Conduct host maintenance, patching, upgrades, and troubleshooting.
SAN Storage & Fibre Channel Networks
- Support and maintain SAN environments, including capacity planning, storage provisioning, and performance monitoring.
- Manage Fibre Channel fabrics, zoning, and connectivity troubleshooting.
Data Backup Solutions
- Manage enterprise backup systems, schedules, retention policies, and recovery processes.
- Execute and document restore operations and contribute to disaster recovery planning.
Operational & Service Responsibilities:
Development of Standards
- Contribute to the creation, review, and improvement of infrastructure standards, policies, and best practices.
Service Monitoring & Proactive Prevention
- Monitor systems and performance metrics to identify early signs of issues.
- Carry out proactive maintenance to reduce downtime and enhance resilience.
Asset Management
- Maintain accurate inventories of hardware, software, licences, and configuration records.
Fault Diagnosis & Resolution
- Investigate and resolve infrastructure faults efficiently, providing root cause analysis where required.
Upgrades & Patching
- Plan and perform updates, firmware upgrades, patch management, and enhancements across supported technologies.
An ability to adapt strong technical skills to a variety of systems and scenarios is essential, enabling you to provide high‑quality professional expertise across the organisation.
Skills & Experience
- 3+ years’ experience in a similar role with solid Microsoft Azure and Microsoft Server skills.
- Working knowledge of VMware, Pure Storage arrays, and Fabric switches is advantageous.
- Experience within a third/fourth line support environment, with strong technical literacy and in‑depth understanding of infrastructure technologies.
- Knowledge of Azure, Windows Servers, end‑user devices, Windows administrative tools, complex line‑of‑business applications, Active Directory, Entra ID, and DNS.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships across multiple teams.
- Proactive approach to problem solving.
- Methodical organisational skills with the ability to manage varied workloads.
Additional information:
Driving licence: There will be occasions when you are required to travel around the force area therefore the successful person will need to hold a full UK driving licence.
Please note that following a successful probation period, this post has a potential on call requirement for which appropriate allowances will be paid.
The base salary for this role is £41,487 - £44,700, you will also receive a market factors uplift of up to £500
