Quantity Surveyor - Construction
£48,459 – £52,194 per annum

Looking for a Quantity Surveyor role where you can lead high impact projects?

This pivotal position sits within a busy Estates department, delivering expert cost management and commercial guidance across a diverse portfolio of around 100 West Yorkshire Police buildings, including a range of operational and specialist facilities.

It offers an exciting opportunity for a skilled professional to provide in house quantity surveying support across all areas of the directorate. You will work within a dynamic team of project managers, building services engineers and technical staff, contributing to the successful delivery of varied capital projects and building services disciplines.

The role is based in Central Wakefield but the ability to travel throughout West Yorkshire to suit the needs of West Yorkshire Police is essential.

Role and Responsibilities

You will drive cost control, deliver accurate financial reporting, and ensure strong commercial performance throughout each project from pre construction to final account. You will also support the wider department in securing value for money across repairs, maintenance contracts and day to day facilities operations. The position requires someone who can work both independently and as part of a collaborative team, with the ability to manage and prioritise a varied and demanding workload.

Key duties include:

• Providing commercial support for construction, refurbishment, repairs, and maintenance projects of varying scale
• Managing cost control activities, including budget oversight, valuations, and ensuring value for money across the estate
• Leading tendering and procurement processes, preparing documentation, analysing costings, and advising on procurement strategies
• Producing detailed financial and progress reports for senior leadership
• Validating financial payment applications submitted by contractors
• Preparing and managing project budgets, cashflows, and cost plans
• Compiling valuations, variations, claims, and final accounts
• Monitoring project costs against budgets and forecasts
• Working collaboratively with project managers, project leads, site teams, and senior leadership

Expectations

To succeed in this role, you will be expected to:
• Work independently and collaboratively within a multi disciplinary team
• Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills for stakeholder engagement, negotiation, and high quality report writing
• Manage financial transactions and supporting managers with budgets exceeding £1m
• Know Health and Safety and Environmental legislation related to construction
• Analyse and interpret complex financial data and produce accurate cost estimates and forecasts that drive best value outcomes
• Know UK construction contracts and procurement routes
• Demonstrate negotiation, communication, and reporting abilities
• Have high attention to detail and strong commercial/financial acumen
• Travel throughout West Yorkshire when required

Essential Criteria

• A degree and/or proven relevant experience in Quantity Surveying within a related construction discipline
• Significant and proven experience as a construction / facilities management Quantity Surveyor, providing QS support to a diverse portfolio of construction projects and maintenance budgets, within the client environment
• Demonstrable experience managing a portfolio of project and maintenance budgets
• A working knowledge of NEC and JCT forms of contract, with experience in their administration
• Ideally a Member of RICS (MRICS) or working towards professional accreditation.
