Role overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) as a Traffic Planner within the Operations and Events Planning Team. The role plays a critical part in ensuring the safe, lawful, and effective delivery of major events, public order operations, ceremonial duties, and other deployments across London. Traffic Planners work closely with police officers, staff colleagues, local authorities, Transport for London (TfL), emergency services, and private contractors to design and implement traffic management arrangements that protect the public, support operational policing objectives, and minimise disruption to London’s road network.

Working for the Met doesn’t have to mean patrolling the streets. Just as important as our uniformed officers is our 14,000-strong team of professional and support staff working behind the scenes. It’s these skilled people who provide the organisational capability to police London.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop comprehensive traffic management plans for events and operations, including road closures, diversions, and security measures.
  • Produce clear and accurate mapping products using approved software to support operational orders and briefings.
  • Apply relevant legislation, policy, and guidance (such as the Road Traffic Regulation Act and Temporary Traffic Orders) to ensure all plans are lawful and proportionate.
  • Work collaboratively with TfL, local authorities, emergency services, and contractors to coordinate signage, barriers, cones, and parking suspensions.
  • Brief police officers and staff on traffic arrangements and contingency plans to ensure effective implementation on the day.
  • Attend events to oversee and adapt traffic management arrangements, providing specialist advice to on-site command teams in dynamic situations.
  • Review previous operations, contribute to debriefs, and capture lessons learned to inform future planning.

Working arrangements

The role is full-time (36 hours per week) and based at Lambeth HQ, with flexibility required to meet operational demands. This includes working approximately one Saturday in eight and occasional on-call responsibilities.

Benefits

You will enjoy the kind of great benefits that you’d expect from one of London's largest employers.

These include:

  • Annual leave entitlement of 28 days plus bank holidays, rising to 33 days after 5 years of service
  • Civil service pension arrangements
  • Interest free season ticket loans
  • Membership of Met sports and social clubs
  • Flexible working conditions and many more.
