Job Title: Civilian Investigator – Operation Northleigh-01
Salary: The starting salary is £45,207.75 which includes allowances totalling £3,009 plus a 12.5% shift allowance.
The salary is broken down as £37,510 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £40,141 Plus, a 12.5% shift allowance and a location allowance of £2,009 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

This is an exciting opportunity to join Operation Northleigh within Specialist Crime of the Metropolitan Police.
We are looking for a civilian investigator to deliver high-quality investigative activity within Operation Northleigh, the criminal investigation and response to the Grenfell Tower disaster, ensuring evidence is identified, secured, and progressed in line with legislation and policy. The role holder will apply Police Investigative Professionalisation (PIP2) standards to complex, sensitive, and high-profile casework, working collaboratively with other investigative teams within Operation Northleigh and the crown prosecution service (CPS) to achieve effective investigative outcomes. They will be responsible for managing HOLMES actions and enquiries for Operation Northleigh, progressing lines of enquiry and escalating for sign-off when appropriate. The role holder will help to build a case file as we move towards seeking charging decisions and will be expected to attend court when required and perform any actions set by the relevant case officer.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Gather, interrogate and analyse information from Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) systems and open sources to identify investigative opportunities and inform lines of enquiry.
- Prepare and conduct formal interviews with suspects, witnesses and victims in line with PIP2 standards, ensuring accurate and admissible testimonies.
- Undertake victim liaison to provide timely updates and maintain confidence in the investigation.
- Secure, preserve and manage evidence and exhibits in line with policy and legislation to maintain continuity and integrity.
- Lead on forensic-related activity, liaising with experts to progress forensic enquiries.
- Identify, plan and progress investigative lines of enquiry, escalating where required for sign-off, to ensure thorough case progression.
- Manage HOLMES (Home Office Large Major Enquiry System) records to ensure accurate case documentation and retrieval.
- Collaborate with UK stakeholders (e.g. Crown Prosecution Service) to share information and coordinate activity.
- Draft sections of comprehensive investigation reports for senior review and decision-making.
- Contribute to organisational learning by reviewing investigative approaches and recommending improvements.
- Transport and manage documentation and exhibits, ensuring secure handling and compliance with continuity requirements.
- Work flexibly as part of a small team, adapting to operational requirements and contributing to team-wide investigative objectives.
Who we're looking for:
- In-depth knowledge of criminal law and the criminal justice system.
- Understanding of investigative techniques, forensic processes, and evidence handling.
- Ability to assess, plan and progress complex lines of enquiry within major investigations.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Proficiency in preparing structured reports and case files.
- IT literacy, including MS Word, Excel and case management systems (training can be provided).
- Experience of managing complex investigations within the last five years.
- Experience of working within a HOLMES environment.
- Demonstrated experience in suspect, witness and victim interviewing.
- Experience of gathering, evaluating and analysing intelligence and information from multiple sources.
- Previous experience of prisoner handling, including custody+ procedures and interviews.
- Valid PIP2 accreditation (essential).
