West Midlands Police are currently recruiting for experienced & passionate Transferees at the rank of Constable/ Detective Constable along with aspiring transferees who are working towards their Detective status to work in one of our most exciting departments - Public Protection Unit (PPU) Child Abuse.

PCs aspiring to become detectives will be given the opportunity to apply to join our ‘Detective Academy’. Upon successfully completing an assessment process, you will be supported to develop your skills, undertake the NIE exam and achieve ICIDP accreditation. 

In addition,  our investigators undergo  the Specialist Child Abuse Investigators Development Programme (SCAIDP).

Our Public Protection Department (PPU) strives for investigative excellence, ensuring justice for our vulnerable community members. Every day, our teams are achieving extraordinary results in dealing with some of the most tragic, human crises and protecting and delivering justice for the most vulnerable children.

Working within our Child Abuse department, you would be responsible for the investigating a range Child abuse offences including neglect, physical and emotional abuse & sexual exploitation. Whilst working closely with partners particularly Children’s Services, your role will be to safeguard victims and families, protecting some of most vulnerable members of society and investigating offences committed against children, including all sexual offences and incidents that occur in a familial setting, or where perpetrators are carers or hold a position of trust.  

Due to the nature of the work carried out, the leadership skills developed within this role will have you equip you with the knowledge and experience you will need to progress towards promotion in the longer term. 
 

Eligibility Criteria
To apply, all applicants must be:

  • Substantive in the rank of Constable 
  • Serving (or have served) with a Home Office Force 
  • The candidate must be PIP 2 accredited, in the process of becoming PIP 2 accredited or be willing undertake the PIP accreditation and participate in the necessary processes and training to achieve this. 
  • Be able to pass the 15 metre JRFT to bleep level 5.4
  • Be able to provide a fully auditable training record 
  • Be able to pass the necessary vetting and medical health and assessment screening 
  • Have no outstanding discipline or integrity issues 
  • We support officers with flexible and part-time working. 
  • Have a good understanding of the investigation process
  • Have strong communication and interpersonal skills to be able to build relationships with victims, internal colleagues and external partners to promote collaborative working. 
  • Ability to effectively plan, prioritise & manager risk

Although we aim to post you to a role in line with your preferences and experience, postings will be decided in line with organisational needs. 

Hours: Teams works a range of shift patterns that include some late shifts and weekends.

Vetting: Successful applicants will be required to pass Recruitment Vetting and Counter Terrorism Clearance scrutiny prior to commencing their role, this will include a full background & financial disclosure as part of the vetting process.

Medical: Appointment to this role will be dependent upon successfully medical checks, which may include a drugs test and if required a fitness test.
