Road Safety Enforcement Officer

Our Roads Policing team are recruiting for four Road Safety Enforcement Officers, operating as part of the wider Roads Policing Team you will enforce road traffic laws and seek to detect and deter other illegal or dangerous activity on the road. 

You will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of all road users. You will be responsible for monitoring traffic, enforcing road safety laws, and educating the public on safe driving practices. Your work will directly contribute to reducing collisions and saving lives on our roads. 

You will work shifts operating as part of the wider Roads Policing team, working alone from a van from hot spot sites within the Avon and Somerset policing area. 

We have positions based at:  

  • Bridgwater (which covers the Taunton and West Somerset areas) 
  • Chipping Sodbury (which covers parts of South Gloucestershire, Bristol and North Somerset Bath & North East Somerset) 
  • Frome (which covers part of Bristol and the Bath & North East Somerset area) 
  • Somerton (which covers Somerset East)

In this role your main responsibilities will include: 

  • Using camera detection devices and other tools to monitor road users and ensure compliance with traffic laws, recording offences for processing. 
  • Attending community events to educate and engage with the public about road safety and promote safe driving habits. 
  • Working closely with colleagues and community organisations to enhance road safety initiatives. 
  • To attend court and give evidence as required 
  • Effectively engaging with members of the public, by utilising your excellent communication and conflict skills to ensure compliance and maintain safety on the roads. 

 

Skills, experience and knowledge required: 

  • Hold a full and current manual driving licence 
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, following probation and completion of training 
  • You will be motivated and have excellent communication skills 

 

Additional Information: 

These roles involve working shifts that include evenings and weekends. Covering a  4 week shift pattern you will work earlies 07:00-17:00; mid shift 10:00-20:00 and lates 12:00-22:00 (during winter hours lates become mid shifts), attracting weekend and shift working allowances. 

Successful applicants will be required to wear uniform to carry out their role. 

Shortlisting will take place following the closing date: week commencing 28th April 2025. 

Candidates successful at the shortlisting process will be required to attend an in person familiarisation event on Monday 12th May in the evening. Interviews are scheduled to take place later that week.  

To be eligible to apply for this role you must have a 3 year ‘checkable history’ in the UK – ideally this means that you would have been resident in the UK for the last 3 years.
