Direct Entry Detective Constable Programme (DCEP/DEDC)
Many police forces offer Direct Entry Detective Constable Programmes (sometimes called DCEP or DEDC). This allows you to apply specifically to become a detective rather than starting as a uniformed officer.
How it Works
You are employed as a police officer from day one and enter an accelerated 2-year programme. It involves initial foundation training, followed by earlier deployment into Investigative Units (CID) compared to the traditional route.
Uniform Component: Even with direct entry, you will typically spend time (around 10–16 weeks) in uniform for initial training and to gain operational experience (Independent Patrol Status).
Requirements
- Education: A Bachelor's degree (level 6) in any subject is generally required, although some forces may accept extensive professional experience (e.g., 1-2 years in investigation, armed forces, or prison service).
- Driving: Full manual UK or EU driving licence.
- Residency: At least three to five years of UK residency.
- Age: 18+ on the first day of the role.
- Key Milestones: You must pass the National Investigators' Exam (NIE) and complete the Professionalising Investigation Programme (PIP) Level 2 Portfolio during the two-year programme.
Traditional Route (Uniformed Officer to Detective)
You can still join as a conventional uniformed Police Constable (PC) and later transfer to a specialized detective role.
Duration: Often takes 3-5 years to become a qualified detective via this route, as you must complete your initial probationary period as a uniformed constable first.
Entry Pathways: Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) or Police Constable Entry Programme (PCEP).
Application Process (2026)
The recruitment process for detective programmes is rigorous and competitive.
- Self-Assessment/Registration: Check eligibility online.
- Online Assessment: National Sift (Situation Judgement Test/Behavioural Styles Questionnaire).
- Interview/Assessment Centre: A panel interview with a senior detective, often including a presentation, role-play exercise, and briefing.
- Pre-employment Checks: Medical exam, fitness test (usually a bleep test to level 5.4), and vetting.
