 The Opportunity

North Yorkshire Police are proud to launch the Police Returner Scheme - a unique opportunity for experienced officers to rejoin NYP and continue making a difference in our communities.Whether you've recently retired from NYP or are approaching retirement, your skills, knowledge, and dedication remain invaluable. This scheme is designed to retain the expertise of NYP officers and align it with the force’s core policing priorities.

 We welcome applications from:

  • Officers who retired from North Yorkshire Police within the last 2 years with 30 years pensionable service.
  • Officers currently serving who are approaching or have reached 30 years pensionable service.
  • Applicants must have had a minimum retirement period of at least 1 calendar month.

All ranks are eligible, and each application will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

 To be considered, applicants must:

  • Have the support of an in-force sponsor (typically a Chief Superintendent or staff equivalent).
  • Meet standard recruitment criteria including vetting, fitness, and medical clearance.
  • Demonstrate a strong attendance record and no outstanding disciplinary matters.

 What to Expect

  • Re-attestation is required for those with a break in service.
  • Returners will rejoin at their former rank and pay level.
  • Allowances will be treated as per new entrants.
  • Probationary periods apply based on time out of service.
  • Flexible working options are available, subject to policy.

 Your Application

Applications must be endorsed by your most recent line manager and sponsor. Your application will be reviewed based on merit and organisational need.

A selection panel will assess applicants, taking into account evidence of the individual's ability to perform in the rank and against the roles identified as having a need to be filled by experienced, skilled and trained officers. This will include reviewing any relevant information the force holds on the individual to confirm suitability to return to the force.

Not all applications will be approved, but unsuccessful candidates have the right to appeal.

Please note:

  • Pension abatement may apply during re-employment.
  • Full abatement means pension payments will pause while you’re re-employed.
  • Pension will be reinstated in full once re-employment ends.
