This role is open to all Police Staff / external candidates who meet the essential criteria of the person spec, regardless of current grade.

About the team
The Senior Vetting Officer supervises the day to day activities of a team of 11 Vetting Officers. You will be working alongside a Police Sargeant, Senior Vetting Officer, and reporting to the Force Vetting Manager. The Senior Vetting Officer ensures that high service standards are achieved, and that vetting decisions are made in accordance with the College of Policing Code of Vetting Practice and associated guidance, and local force vetting policy.
About the role
The Senior Vetting Officer ensures that systems, processes and practices are maintained and supported in accordance with relevant best practice, policy and legislation. To ensure that individuals working with or for the Force have an acceptable level of integrity so as to guarantee that they do not pose an undue threat to the security of the police, government or sensitive information, systems assets, premises and persons. The role requires support to be provided to the Vetting Officer team, by providing regular training and guidance to support professional development.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will be:
- Monitor and manage team performance, devising and implementing effective strategies to identify issues and ensure continuous improvement.
- Manage complex cases to deliver appropriate risk-based vetting decisions and ensure vetting process and follow-up requirements are effectively managed and delivered.
- Conduct Vetting interviews, where necessary to clarify information, ensuring vetting decisions are based on an appropriate understanding of the information.
- Provide information, advice and guidance on vetting matters, to act as a point of contact for the City of London Police, ensuring the Vetting Team has compliance with national and force policies, organisational priorities, best practice and legislative requirements.
- Responsible for risk assessing all adverse findings and providing evidence based decisions on suitability for vetting clearance, whilst maintaining compliance with the National Vetting Code of Practice legislation, force policy & APP for Vetting.
For this role, we need you to have experience of:
- Demonstrate the ability to lead and develop staff.
- Demonstrate the ability to work independently to tight deadlines and under pressure with confidence, whilst maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
- Address groups and individuals, deliver messages and answer questions concisely with sound factual reasoning.
- Ability to be perceptive, assess character, interpret behaviour and identify motivation.

Selection Process
As part of the initial application process, you will be asked to evidence how your experience, skills, and knowledge demonstrate your ability to meet the person specification of the role.
The application and interview will be tested under Level 2 of the College of Policing Competency and Values Framework.
Applicants who fail to address the skills/knowledge/experience of the job description will not be considered.

Following shortlisting, successful candidates will be invited to attend a competency-based interview, to be held Week commencing 15th December 2025.
