6309 Victim and Witness Support Officer

We are looking to recruit a Victim & Witness Support officer on a 12 month fixed term secondment, this position is to cover maternity leave. 

The successfully candidate will work in Victims hub, Wheatstone House and report to the Witness care Team leader. 

The main responsibilities of the role are to support victims and witnesses in receiving updates from court and attending court to give evidence.

This involves contacting victims and witnesses both by telephone, email and by letter so excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. The role also requires the ability to be able to manage difficult and challenging conversations. To support victims and witness who have been granted to give evidence from a police live link, you will also be expected to facilitate this and provide face to face support.

The role requires you to work as part of a team but to work closely with police officers regarding victim and witness requirements (sometimes attending court yourself to do so) and to liaise with our partner agencies within the Criminal Justice System.

Working pattern: Contracted to 37 hour week, working Monday to Friday 9am-5pm, however flexibility may be expected in order to meet operational demand.

Notice for internal candidates: this role is advertised as a fixed-term contract. In the event that you successfully interview for this role, you will accept the role on either a secondment or fixed-term contract basis.

You will only be offered a secondment subject to your current Line Manager’s approval - please note that there is no guarantee that management will agree to the secondment and there is no obligation for them to do so. It is advisable to liaise with management to see if a secondment would be supported before submitting an application.

In the event that you are offered the role as a fixed-term contract, you should be aware that you have no right to return to your previous role and will leave the force when your contract ends. In the event that you have accrued two years’ continuous service when your contract ends, you may be eligible to be added to the redeployment register, however it is not guaranteed that we will be able to offer you a suitable alternative. When accepting the role on a fixed-term basis, you take the personal risk that your employment with the force may end at the end of the contract.
