HP - Special Constable (Volunteer Police Officer) Jan 2026

Do you want to make a difference? If so, why not join Humberside Police as a Special Constable?

We are looking for applicants to join us in early 2026 who want to spend their spare time protecting the communities of Humberside. Special Constables have the same powers as regular officers, wear the same uniform and are issued with the same protective equipment including handcuffs and Asp baton. This is coupled with an understanding of the law and the teaching of various policing procedures.

As a Special Constable, you will undertake a wide range of policing duties, providing an essential link between the police and our diverse communities within Humberside, helping the force to build relationships with the communities and helping to meet policing needs, whilst also increasing the public’s confidence in the police service.

Special Constables are an integral part of our policing community and come from all walks of life, volunteering for a minimum of 16 hours a month, these shifts are flexible and can easily fit around your regular job. In order to be eligible to apply, you must be at least 18 years old, there is no upper age limit. You must also have a good level of fitness to pass the fitness test and also be able to pass the medical examination.

Within Humberside, we have a strong family spirit between our Staff, Police Officers and Special Constabulary, this is paramount in order to deliver a great service to the public we serve. We value the contribution of all of our Special Constables and the difference that they make both to the communities and Humberside Police.

We welcome applications from people who have fulfilling roles and that are wanting to give something back to the community by volunteering as a Career Special Constable. Within the Special Constabulary, we have a diverse group of people who have been within Humberside Police for numerous years.

Joining Humberside Special Constabulary opens up a world of opportunity for personal and professional advancement. Undergoing the training and then going out on patrol makes a welcome break from day-to-day life, bringing excitement and challenge with every day you volunteer.

Please Note: Training Schedule

You are required to undertake a minimum of 26 training sessions - 2 to 3 online sessions which take place during weekday evenings and 1 to 2 in-person weekend sessions. These training sessions must be attended in order to qualify to become a Special Constable. This means giving up your free time and committing to a training schedule of around 3 to 4 months.

The role of Special Constable is rewarding but comes with challenges, you will be volunteering as a Special Police Officer which means you will place yourself in challenging situations on each shift once you are trained, you will be a fully warranted officer with the same powers as a Police Officer.
