Sergeant Promotion Process
April 2025
The process will be open to internal and external candidates. The process will comprise of the following two stages:
Stage One: Application form
- Candidates will request an application form and a copy of the Manual of Guidance from Recruiting
- The Manual of Guidance will include a presentation question for candidates to deliver their answer in presentation format on the day of Assessment
- Candidates are required to submit an application form including their current ‘live’ PDR and their last completed PDR, both containing CPD objectives with evidence against them, their 9 box grid rating and LM endorsement to the PA of their command as per the Manual of Guidance (internal candidates). This needs to be submitted by 0900 on Friday 2nd May 2025 or to Recruitment (external candidates) for endorsement by 0900 on Friday 2nd May 2025.
- The endorsement will consist of 2 options: Supported or Not Supported (Please read Eligibility Criteria below to ensure you are following the updated process).
- Supported candidates will progress to Stage 2
- Unsupported candidates must have a clear development plan in place in their PDR and be provided with written rationale as to why they have not been supported
Stage Two (A): Pre-prepared Presentation
The Manual of Guidance will include a pre-prepared presentation question to deliver on the day. This can be in either a PowerPoint presentation or flipchart format. Candidates will need to submit any PowerPoint presentations by 1200 the working day prior to their board. If candidates wish to present via flipchart, this must be prepared and brought on the day but also inform recruiting of this by 1200 the day prior to their board.
Stage Two (B): Interview
This stage will assess candidates against the CVF. Full details of the process will be provided at the preparation workshops, where we will provide an overview of the requirement of the rank and detail the steps of the process. This will be supplemented by a Manual of guidance published with the application form that provides all relevant information.
Eligibility and How to Apply
Eligible candidates will:
- Have passed their probation and NPPF step 2 / OSPRE 1 & 2, or have a valid OSPRE S1 (Part 1) qualification
- Meet the Force Attendance Criteria
- Have an appropriate level of conduct
- Have a minimum ‘Successful’ rating within most recent / current PDR
- Have an up to date 9 box grid rating
- Prior to the date of the board, you must have completed the First Line Leadership Programme (FLLP) – Introduction to Leadership course, including the mandatory online learning package on College Learn (Internal Candidates Only)
- Not currently be subject to UPP or live performance improvement action
- Be willing and able to serve anywhere in the Force area and in any role at the newly promoted rank at the discretion of the Chief Constable
- Accept that the order of promotion is completely at the discretion of the Chief Constable
Please note: Before progressing with your application you should arrange to meet with your line management to hold a professional discussion about your intention to apply and your readiness for promotion to include feedback about your performance.

- Applications available from: 1200 Monday 14th April 2025
- Closing date for internal candidates to PA's of the Commands: 0900 Friday 2nd May 2025
- Closing date for external candidates to Recruiting: 0900 Friday 2nd May 2025
- Step 2 Commences: 16th June 2025
- Notification of Results: Following Step 2
As per the previous promotion announcements during the year, candidates will be required to provide meaningful PDR and CPD logs with their application form, demonstrating a commitment to personal and professional development over the last 12 months and highlighting a readiness now for promotion. Commands will not support candidates who are not able to demonstrate evidence of development.

Preparation Support Sessions and FLLP Dates
The Talent Development Team will also be holding a number of promotion board support sessions to help prepare you for the upcoming board. These support sessions will cover the board process, presentation planning and delivery, answering competency based questions, providing evidence based answers, CVF, POAP and leadership behaviours to build self-confidence.
Support sessions dates for the Sergeant boards are as follows:
2 hour online sessions:
- Friday 16th May 2025 - 10am - 12pm
- Monday 19th May 2025 - 1:00pm - 3:00pm
- Wednesday 4th June 2025 - 10am - 12pm
3 hour drop in (in person) sessions:
- Friday 9th May 2025 - 10am - 1pm - Conference Room 1 Clough Road PS
- Thursday 15th May 2025 - 10am - 1pm - Conference Room Scunthorpe PS
- Wednesday 21st May 2025 - 10am - 1pm - Conference Room 11 Melton 2 PS
As per the eligibility criteria, all applicants must have fully completed the FLLP prior to their board. Applicants are able to apply and submit an application as long as they are booked onto attend the below sessions if they haven't already completed this.

- Wednesday 28th May 2025 - Day 2
