Humberside Police are looking for a highly motivated individual to join them in their Specialist Operations Unit as a Force Armourer.
The post holder will be required to maintain and repair all weapons/ammunition used by the force and ensure that the training facilities and ancillary equipment are available for use as required.
The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying potential welfare and risks with officers to ensure any concerns with regard their ability to carry out their duty and fitness to carry are escalated appropriately.
The post holder must be able to travel the force area with access to their own vehicle.
Key Responsibilities:
- Undertakes general maintenance and repair of all weapons/ammunition and ancillary equipment (including specialist equipment) within the Force. This will require a high level of proficiency across the multiple weapon systems currently in service including, but not limited to the current operational weapon systems, conventional training weapons, NLTA (Non-Lethal Training Ammunition) weapons and a wide range of display & exhibit items.
- Monitors and orders supplies with regard to armouries and the range including regular audit and stocktaking of all assets. Ensuring ammunition kit bags are maintained in preparation for operational events.
- To ensure live munitions are securely and separately held from blank, NLTA and pyrotechnics in accordance with current legislation with regular inspections.
- Acts as gatekeeper for seized weapons/air weapons and CED testing and advises on need for submission for further evidential testing. Uses specialist knowledge to assist in the make safe of recovered firearms.
- Attends regular Armourers meetings undertaking project work, evaluations and provide regional lead on areas agreed within the group. May also be required to attend national groups as agreed by the Chief Firearms Instructor (CFI) / Chief Taser Instructor (CTI).
- Research on best practice, new developments and new procedures and make recommendations to the CFI / CTI. Assists in the evaluation of new weapon types for the force.
- Liaises with the Firearms Licensing Section on a regular basis, assisting in the destruction of weapons when necessary, and carrying out the make-safe of unknown or unusual weapons where appropriate.
- Liaises regularly with other Forces, organisations and suppliers to ensure the Force is working to current best practice and carrying out research to assist in the solution of operational and training issues by identifying best value weapons, ammunition, ancillaries and equipment.
- Liaise with weapons manufacturers to ascertain and assess technical specifications for proposed weapon systems, including the provision of detailed reports outlining technical data, practical effectiveness for use within the Force and financial implications for both short and long term costs.
What the role requires:
- Experience working in a confidential environment.
- Physical demanding job requires ability to lift and carry.
- Educated to Level 4 standard or equivalent and/or has equivalent experience in a similar role.
- Has substantial ‘hands on’ experience in working with firearms e.g., armed forces/police.
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to plan, organise and prioritise multiple activities, escalating as and when appropriate.
- Excellent organisational skills
- Ability to work with minimum supervision when required.
- Carries out tasks in an accurate and methodical manner with an eye for detail.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability to prioritise workload.
