Location: Various Locations across the City of London Police

Rank: Qualified Sergeants/Detective Sergeants on promotion (must hold either a valid Part 1 and 2 OSPRE or NPPF Legal examination at the time of application) or Substantive Inspectors/Detective Inspectors on lateral transfer

Please note that internal officers that are currently in Temporary Uniform and Detective Inspector roles, who wish to remain in post, are expected to apply for promotion within this process.

Salary: National Police Pay Scales

Vetting Level: The vetting level for these roles varies.

The City of London Police is a recognised Home Office Force based in the heart of the financial centre of London. Our local role, where we are responsible for keeping the iconic City of London safe, alongside our national roles in relation to fraud, cyber and economic crime. As an organisation, we will also lead and support the implementation of the new National Fraud Strategy objectives co-ordinate national pursue and protect campaigns against high harm threats, and encourage greater prioritisation of fraud across policing.

Our Local Policing directorate is home to the force’s Response and Neighbourhood Policing teams and other uniformed specialist units including Roads Policing, Project Servator, Firearms, Public Order and the Force Control Room. We provide the first response to the public, specialist policing services and delivery of local Neighbourhood Policing services to our resident, business and transient City of London communities.

Our Specialist Operations directorate is home to the force’s Investigation and Intelligence teams and other specialist units including, Public Protection Custody, Criminal Justice, Covert & CT Policing, Forensics and Cyber Protect teams. We deliver the very highest of investigation standards alongside excellent support through our enabling services – together this ensures we provide a first-class response to victims and secure the very best outcomes to keep those that work, live and visit the city safe and feeling safe.

Additionally, we have national roles in relation to fraud, cyber and economic crime. We lead and support the National Fraud, Economic Crime and Cyber Crime Strategy. We co-ordinate national pursue and protect campaigns against high harm threats, and encourage greater prioritisation of fraud across policing.

The selection/promotion process comprises of the following:

  • A competency based online application form: Officers applying on promotion (both internal and external) are required to complete the accompanying endorsement form, demonstrating their support for your promotion. The application form will ask the candidates to provide examples (within the last three years) against the following competencies, we are emotionally aware, we are collaborative, and we take ownership. There will also be a question on why me why now? which will be scored against the value of Public Service.
  • Please note that without an endorsement form, we will not be able to progress your application. Officers applying on lateral transfer are not required to complete an endorsement form.
  • Shortlisting panel: the panel will assess your application against the Competency Value Framework (CVF).
  • Boards/Selection panel: Interviews are scheduled for w/c 22nd April – 9th May 2025.
    Candidates who are successful at shortlisting stage will be invited to attend an interview which will assess the following:
  • Professional Conversation: the assessment and delivery of a briefing to the panel will assess the candidates’ ability to deal with operational issues at Inspector level. The professional conversation assessment will test we analyse critically, we take ownership, we support and inspire and the value of respect and empathy.
  • Competency based interview: Using the Competency Values Framework, the interview will test we are emotionally aware, we are collaborative, we are innovative and open minded and the value of courage. At least one question will be forward facing.
