202402 - MPS Return Scheme Retired Officers

Return Scheme

The Met has re-opened its Return Scheme.  The scheme is now open to uniform or detective constables and sergeants.

You can apply if you’ve retired from the Met within the last two years; have reached 30 years’ service and are eligible to retire; or you’re reaching that point in the next six months.

This scheme allows you to retire, benefit from your pension lump sum, and then return to continue your career in the Met.

The scheme in detail

It helps us to keep the skills of officers who have retired, or would otherwise have chosen to retire.

We really appreciate the skills and experience that officers who have served London for decades give the Met.  That’s important now more than ever as we support our large numbers of newer officers develop into their own policing career and drive an even better service to the public, building more trust, less crime and high standards.

This scheme allows an officer to retire and after a minimum one month to a maximum of two years break in service return as an officer, with access to your pension lump sum.  Your pension will be subject to abatement during your service with us.  You can choose to join the Police Pension Scheme 2015, or opt out.

Under this scheme officers who return will be posted in line with our priorities to deliver the New Met for London plan and our frontline focus.  At this point in time that includes:

  • Specialist roles in L&D; MetCC; MO7 and MO19 Armed Response
  • Roles within our BCUs, both uniform and detectives across neighbourhoods; response; public protection and local investigations

This scheme is open to:

  • those retired from the Met within the last two years

The previous Enhanced Return Scheme has closed.  There are no plans to re-open it.
