The Legal Services Department provides legal advice and representation to both Humberside Police & South Yorkshire Police, this exciting post will be in our operational policing team, you will be responsible for:
- Providing legal advice to the Chief Constable, police officers and staff across a wide range of operational policing matters and protective orders. Attending and giving advice at various meetings across the force including GOLD groups.
- Having conduct of a varied case load in the main comprising of civil preventative orders, including but not limited to Stalking Protection Orders, Sexual Offence Act Orders, Forced Marriage Protection Orders , Violent Offender Orders, ASB Injunctions, Proceeds of Crime Act orders, Closure Orders, and Licensing cases.
- Undertaking advocacy in the Magistrates Court, County Court, Family Court, Licensing Committees (and Crown Court where appropriate)
- Provide advice and representation for cases involving police disclosure in Family law cases.
- Maintaining up to date legal knowledge to prepare advice and guidance regarding the Force-wide impact and implications of developments in legislation and case law.
- Providing training to officers/staff as and when required on operational matters.
- Developing and maintaining positive and constructive relationships with all members of the Force, to include managers, officers, staff and external agencies and external law firms to ensure the timely provision of legal advice.

Skills and experience:
- Solicitor/Barrister with a current practising certificate Legal Executive (Fellow of CILEX with current litigation practice rights and rights of audience qualification).
- Advocacy skills and detailed knowledge of law and practice in at least one of the following areas: public protection (civil preventative orders such as Sexual Harm Prevention Orders, Sexual Risk Orders, Civil Injunctions etc) criminal law, civil law.
- Knowledge and understanding of ECHR, Magistrates Court Practice, along with advocacy experience and rights of audience (minimum solicitors rights).
- Substantial post-qualification experience in a relevant area of the appropriate specialism
- Ability to manage a considerable and diverse caseload providing clear and legally sound advice. Ability to work in a highly pressurised environment and to be able to offer flexibility and advice within tight time constraints.
- Demonstrates the ability to persuade others to achieve positive results.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills to deal with all ranks of officer, support staff and external agencies.
