Job Title: Public and Employers Liability Claims Team Manager
Salary: The starting salary for this part time role is up to £27,452 (pro-rata) which includes allowances totalling up to £1,708 (pro-rata).
The full-time (36 hours p/w) salary is broken down, as £44,132 basic salary, which increases annually until the top of the scale £52,652. Plus, a location allowance of £1,928 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

We are hiring:
The Met’s Insurance and Claims Services is an in-house, London based police claims handling team. We are part of Finance Services, within the Met’s Commercial Services function. The team performs a critical role for Met through claims management function, strategic insurance programme and related internal insurable risk and indemnity services.
We respond to legal liability claims against the Met, primarily focusing on 3rd party claims from members of the public for damage of property and personal injury. The PL&EL team manager is also responsible for handling employer liability claims made by any staff or officers against the organisation.
The strategic insurance programme we manage protects the assets of the MPS and the related internal insurable risk and indemnity services we provide informs and enables operational areas of the Met.
We are now looking for an Insurance Public and Employers Liability Claims Team Manager to join our team. This role exists primarily to manage the Public and Employers Liability Claims Team (currently 6 Claims Handlers) in dealing with a wide range of 3rd party claims. In addition, the Claims Manager will use their expertise to address complex cases and contribute to the management of an effective process.
The breadth of work the Insurance and Claims Services covers will challenge and develop you, whilst giving you the opportunity to positively influence and shape our future and continue to restore public trust in policing. You will apply your experience and understanding of technical standards in the collision repair services, to lead members of the Claims Team in the effective monitoring of compensation spend.
Successful applications should provide evidence of:
- Extensive experience in dealing with complex liability claims involving personal injury, material damage, employee matters.
- An in-depth knowledge Civil Procedure Rules, Pre-Action Protocols, detailed knowledge of relevant case law and Judicial Studies Board guidelines to be able to settle matters of quantum.
- Experience of handling claims submitted via the MOJ Portal up to and including Stage 3 (litigation with liability agreed).
- Substantial experience in management and leadership of staff
- Knowledge of specialist legal systems (e.g. Ministry of Justice Portal)
- Working knowledge of relevant legislation (e.g. the Animals Act, Occupiers Liability Act and Data Protection Legislation)
- Detailed knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel with the ability to produce Management Information to reinforce projected cost savings for this role.
In addition, candidates must demonstrate:
- The ability to identify and understand the needs of the business, as well as potential barriers, to ensure they are adequately accounted for.
- The ability to influence across varied internal and external stakeholder management group.
- Proven negotiation skills in securing reasonable costs for third party repair costs.
- Personal drive to maintain relevant technical knowledge and skills required to support front line operations and keep up to date with emerging technology and industry practices.
- Records of being result orientated, willing to take ownership for setting and achieving high standards and targets.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate both confidently and effectively on technical matters to internal and external customers.
- An excellent customer service attitude and approach.
- The ability to write technical reports and summarise key information for internal and external stakeholders, with appropriate costings.
